Faulty Files

If you're here, your background file must not be displaying properly when you click on its name in your GeoCities directory. Follow the steps below to fix the problem.

  1. Is your graphic a GIF or JPG file? No matter what your answer, make sure you read #2 to make sure it really is GIF or JPG.

  2. No other file types will work. If you want to use a graphic but it's another file type, you must use a graphics program (such as Paint Shop Pro) to convert it to GIF or JPG. Simply renaming a file to GIF or JPG will never work. If you've successfully converted your graphic, go back and continue on at #2 on the first page.

  3. Can you open and view your graphic from your hard drive? Go into your browser and select the "File" menu, then "Open..." or "Open File in Browser." Browse to find your background graphic and open it. Will it display? If yes, go to #4. If not, you've probably got a corrupted file. There isn't much you can do for that. All you can do is make or find a different graphic. (I suggest you take a look at the free, customizable images at The Background Mold.)

  4. Try uploading the file again. Sometimes there are errors when the file is uploaded. Does it work when you click on it in your GeoCities directory since you re-uploaded it? If yes, go back and continue on at #2 on the first page. If no, you've probably done something wrong. (Make sure you've waited for your upload to get into your directory. A good way of knowing when it's updated is to change the file name of your graphic before you upload. That way, when the new name shows up, you know that it's the new version. You can just rename it to the former name after it appears so it matches your HTML code.)
