Monster in the Night
I lie here in my bed at night
And dream up grisly tales
Of theives and ghosts and death and such
And bite off all my nails
The house is deathly quiet
And I jump at every sound
I sit up in my bed this time
And slowly look around
I bravely turn until my eyes
Meet something in the night
Then suddenly my body
Becomes overcome with fright
My neck hairs stand until on end
My knees, they start to knock
A chill is creeping up my spine
My toes curl in their sock
I know this has to be my mind
As I still my shaking knee
But wait, this sure can't be my mind
It's staring back at me
I stare at it in horror
As I dream of being fought
It seems like hours since I've moved
Wait, I have a thought
My fingers fumble through the air
And rest on something long
I gather up my nerve and then
I flick the lightswitch on
I stare and it stares back at me
And then I start to grin
For it had been the looking glass
That I'd been looking in
