Salt Layer Candles

Materials Needed
Table SaltPowdered tempra paint
Glass jarsCandle wax (colored)
Candle wickCandle bag to melt wax in
Parafin wax (optional)toothpicks, spoon etc for making designs

Note: You can find items needed at craft or art supply stores, the salt I got in bulk from a warehouse type store (Sam's Club).

Directions:
Put some salt in a plastic bag and add powdered tempra paint a little at a time. Shake to distribute colore. (A little tempra paint goes a long way).

Layer the colored salt in jars and make the design as you go. Do NOT layer with salt to the top of the jar. Leave about an inch of room for the melted wax to seal the design.

Have an adult melt the colored candle wax in the melting bag in boiling water. GIRLS SHOULD NOT DO THIS PART.

When the wax is melted let it cool slightly and have an ADULT poor the wax slowly on top of the salt layers. Place a wick in the center of your candle and press down so that you go a short way into the salt layer with the wick. GIRLS SHOULD NOT POUR THE MELTED WAX.

Let the wax harden before moving the candle.

We made pastel colors of salt in the following colors: yellow, blue, green, orange, pink, and purple. We used yellow, blue, and purple wax colors. We made the wax go further by shaving off parafin wax and melting with the colored wax. We also added cinamon oil to our melted wax.

This was one of our girls favoirte crafts (we did as Brownies) and the candles turned out really SUPER. Everyone's design was different and interesting. The only thing the girls should NOT do is to melt and pour the wax. Severe burns could result if not careful.
