PLAYING WITH YOUR GERBILS
There are plenty games that you can do with your gerbils. It keeps
them happy and healthy. It also helps to have a better relationship. Here`s some games
that my critters do:
- Exercise ball : It`s a ball made of transparent plastic, in wich your gerbil
can run around the house, without the risk of chewing things they should not,
disappear or encounter the CAT. It`s amusing to see them bounce on the walls sometimes,
or trying to catch objects trough the plastic barrier.
- Running free : You can let a gerbil run free on the floor, but be careful!
Keep it in a closed room, with nothing that could hurt it, such as electric cords. When
you want to put it back in it`s cage, don`t chase it, it will just run more. Try throwing a
towel on the gerbil instead. It will "freeze" under and you can catch it easily.
- Toys : There is a lot of toys available for rodents. Wheel, tubes, wood toys,
houses and glass bowls are nice. Avoid plastic, they will destroy it within a week or two.
"Home made" toys can be boxes to hide, cardboard to chew on and toilet paper tubes.
They also love to take baths in chinchilla`s dust.
- Tricks : You can teach some tricks to your gerbil, but nothing complicated.
Try the well known labyrinths, lights or trap experiences. Get them used to you and
make them crawl up on your hands, arms and shoulders. Never scare them with abrupt
movements, squeeze them, take them by the tail or chase them around the cage. They would fear you.
