Unique Zoitiques Columnist - Borzoi Connection Magazine

Hello! Welcome to the Bon-Ton Borzoi WebPages! Bon-Ton Borzoi started back in 1969, when our first Borzoi purchased came from the Del-Jer Kennels, located in Burlington, Wisconsin. Del-Jer was purchasing stock from James Barr, at the Sunbarr Ranch, while Mr. Barr had decided to retire from breeding.

Our first Borzoi was Bonne Brindle Bon-Ton (Brindy). After showing her a few times, we realized that we needed another Borzoi, and as the usual story goes, found out you can't just have one Borzoi, so we acquired CH. Zorro Markovo of Del-Jer (Sunbarr's Du Red x Del-Jer's Lara Lieh). Zorro (Zackery's great great grandfather) was a pleasure to show. He would practically set himself up, and gave the regal look all Borzoi should possess and proved that by finishing his championship. He was only 30-1/2", but had coat that was so long and silky, his brisket hair almost touched the ground as he stood still.

Although we did not breed a lot, we did have three litters, with several champions, including the #6 Borzoi in 1978. That dog was our lovely CH. Bon-Ton's Whizzer of Oz (CH. Zorro Markovo of Del-Jer x CH. Bon-Ton's Zorina); however, Oz was just a cute add-on and not a kennel [at that time]. He won many Hound Group placings (including a Group 1), and was always owner handled.

Litter sister to Whizzer, CH. Bon-Ton's Kalista Zora , held the record for the most dogs defeated at the Midwest Borzoi Club Specialty at Detroit in 1978, under judge Robin Searle from England. So at least we did get a taste of winning big in the ring. At this point in time, I have no idea if the record of 202 Borzoi defeated at this particular Specialty has ever been broken.

Since the passing of my mother, Lorraine Smith, in 1990, we have not been as enthusiastic to hit the show scene. On occasion I attend a dog show here and there, but nothing like in the 70’s-80’s. I am more into the artifacts collecting of Borzoi now. Because I have a house filled with well over 1,500 Borzoi items, some say I should open it up as a museum! Or if you don’t like visiting museums, check out the Borzoi Connection Magazine where I write about my treasures on a quarterly basis!

I am a member of the Midwest Borzoi Club, and the Borzoi Club of America, and would love to chat collectibles with you anytime. Drop me a line at: borzoi@mc.net when you get a chance.
