FORMATION

The Unit was formed on 3rd November 1939 with recruits drawn from every state in the Commonwealth, including the Northern Territory, New Guinea and the Pacific Islands. Nearly all the originals were members of Light Horse Regiments or Armoured Car Regiments of the C.M.F.

TITLE OF UNIT

Originally titled the
6th DIVISION RECONNAISSANCE REGIMENT,
it was bestowed the honour of SENIOR REGIMENT of the 2nd A.I.F. 1939 - 1945. It sailed with the first convoy of 12 ships on 10th January, 1940, for training in Palestine and Egypt, and was blooded in Wavell's desert campaign.
It was renamed
6th AUSTRALIAN DIVISION CAVALRY REGIMENT

on 8th June 1940 and in November 1943 was renamed
2/6 CAVALRY COMMANDO REGIMENT.

REGIMENTAL COLOURS

The colours which were adopted from the Royal Tank Corps are Brown, Red and Green, signifying the motto,
"Through Mud and Blood to the Green Fields Beyond".

ITEMS OF INTEREST

Originally formed in 1939 as an Armoured Regiment, it finished up in New Guinea on foot.
1. It was the Senior Regiment of the AIF 1939 - 45.
2. It was the first Unit in action in North Africa in 1940 and last out in New Guinea in 1945 when it brought the Japanese General Adachi in to surrender at Wewak.
3. It was one of only three Units in the AIF to fight all the King's enemies (Italians, Germans, Vichy French and Japanese).
4. It was the only Unit in the AIF to wear a Battle Honour on it's Uniform.
5. It was the only Unit of the AIF (1st or 2nd World War) to fight Mechanised, Motorised, on Horseback and on Foot.
6. It was the Regiment concerned when for the first time in Australian Army History, the Commander of a Division wrote to Corps placing on record his appreciation of the work done by a Unit from another Division in support of his own.
