Morris and Winnie
Morris (1977? - 1993)
Morris was my first cat. He was a stray that was taken in by friends of my parents. The friends kept him for two years, until they discovered that their son was allergic to Morris. So Morris came to live with me in 1979. He was a long haired cat and his fur was a golden color. Morris grew up with me and let me treat him like my baby. He even let me dress him up in doll's clothing. Morris died while I was away at graduate school, and I have missed him ever since.
Winnie (dates unknown)
Winnie was my family's dog when I was a little. I don't know when we got him, because I don't remember I time when he was not around. Winnie was a brown Staffordshire Bull Terrier and his full name was really Winston Churchill, III. Although Winnie was a type of pit bull, he was a very friendly dog and never attacked anyone. When I was in 3rd grade, Winnie disappeared one night during a rainstorm. My family put ads in the paper and looked for him for days, making several trips to the Humane Society. We never found him.
The one good thing that came out of the loss of Winnie was that I saw an animal shelter for the first time and learned that the animals would die if no one adopted them. I promised myself then that all my future pets would come from animal shelters. So far, I have kept that promise.
