The Great Pryenees

What I have learned from my dog!

I started reading and learning about the Great Pyrs a few months before we actually brought home Mikey. My Dad had talked about wanting to own one of these dogs for years.

The Great Pryrenees are beautiful large white dogs. A full grown Pry weighs approximately 125 pounds. Pyrs are intelligent and very devoted to the family. They are not "your dogs"; but instead, "you" are "their people". They are known as the "Gentle Giants". Now that we have Mikey, I understand why. He turned one year old on August the 5th. But he started looking really big by the time he was six months. Most of the pictures you have seen here of him, he is six or seven months old in. He is so big, but so gentle. He's like a teddy bear. They protect most smaller animals, sheep, children, and especially their people.

My dog Mikey lives outside, although they say Pyrs are easy to house train. We were not home enough when we first got him to really work on training him. We have a small dog pen, but seldom put Mikey in there unless we are afraid for him to sit under the trees during a storm. We had him in there one day and went somewhere. Our neighbor told us while we were gone Mikey had jumped out of his pen and played in the backyard. Our backyard has a much higher fence which we got shortly before getting Mikey from the breeder. Our neighbor said that when Mikey saw my Dad's car returning home, he ran and jumped back in his pen. He didn't want us to know that 'he knows how to get out'. He is soooo smart.

He has grown so much since we brought him home at approximately two months old. And he isn't even a year old yet. He takes good care of me and my sister. If she is in the house crying (because she hurt herself or something), Mikey runs around in circles barking until she quits.

My big brother's girlfriend gave him a baby kitten. Mikey lets her drink water with him in his big water bucket. He likes Miss Kitty and knows that she belongs in the backyard with him.

Here's me with Mikey when he was around 6 or 7 months old. Look into his beautiful eyes. He is terrific. Mikey was born on August 5, 1997.

Here is a picture made of Mike in August (1 year old):
