CAMBRAI

Info taken from:
The Columbia Encyclopedia,
Columbia University Press, NY 1942

1. Cambrai is a fortified town on the Escaut or Scheldt River (Nord dept.) in Northern France.
During WW1 there were 2 major battles fought there, one in 1917, the other in 1918.

2. The LEAGUE OF CAMBRAI
(1508-1510)
was an alliance formed by the
Emperor Maximilian I,
Louis XII of France
(see Damours: one saved the King's life during the Crusades and was rewarded by being titled)
Ferdinand the Catholic
and Pope Julius II,
ostensibly for a Crusade against the Turks, but actually to forward the interest of the papacy by humbling Venice.

In 1509, Louis X11 undertook a campaign against Venice and won the Victory of Agnadello, which resulted in cessions by the Venetians to Naples and the Pope.

In 1510 the Pope became reconciled to Venice and began forming the Holy League against France.
