The Catalorgne family originates in the Bearn
as did the family of Jean-Jacques d'Abbadie,
second baron of Saint-Castin,
and his wife Isabelle de Bearn-Bonasse,
who were the paternal grand-parents of
Anselme de St-Castin

There was a Jean de Catalorgne
who accompanied Louis IX in Egypt
and was there 1249, when Damiette was taken.

LOUIS IX

A friend of his, whose descendants of theirs were to marry, a D'Amours who saved the life of the King Louis IX, a.k.a. Saint Louis, a few years earlier, whereas Catalogne distinguished himself for his courage in Egypt.
It is in memory of his actions in this campaign that the Crescent was added in the Catalorgne family armory :
"D'or, au chevron de gueules, accompagne au chef d'un croissant, et d'une etoile de meme; ... orne de tous ses lambrequins"

In 1690, Gedeon de Catalorgne married
MARIE-ANNE LEMIRE(1669-1749), the 6th daughter of
Jean LeMire and Louise Marsolet

Marie-Anne LeMire was baptized May 26th 1669, and for GodMother she had Marie-Anne de Lauzon, daughter of "le Grand Senechal" standing-in for Madame de la Peltrie.
On August 11th 1690 she married Gedeon de Catalorgne. They had 14 children out of which 5 daughters and 1 son survived:

Marie-Genevieve de Catalorgne,
dame Louis D'Amours de Louvieres, her cousin

Elisabeth de Catalorgne,
dame Michel de Gannes

Jeanne-Elisabeth de Catalorgne,
dame Guillaume Pothier du Buisson

Charlotte-Julie de Catalorgne,
dame Michel Gamelin

Hortense de Catalorgne,
Madame de Landriere

Joseph de Catalorgne, born in 1694 who married Charlotte Renaud du Buisson in 1733.

Gedeon was a French nobleman, second son, born in the BEARN,(and he must have known Jourdain Lajoix (Lajus), Chief of the Doctors in Bearn, France (major des medecins de Nay en Bearn) who was married to the daughter of his sister-in-law, Marie LeMire, dame Pierre Moreau, namely to Louise Elisabeth Moreau, baptised in 1691, the year after Gedeon and Marie-Anne got married)

Gedeon de Catalorgne was Cartographer and Ingeneer to the King Louis XIV

Gedeon had a colourful life, but in a nutshell: being a Huguenot he left France during the religious persecutions, was shipwrecked, abjured his faith in favour of Catholicism, married Marie-Anne Lemire.
He was responsible for the plans and the building of the early Canal Lachine and the Louisbourg fortifications. He died there in 1729.

Marie-Anne Lemire, born in 1669, was one of the 46 Grand-children of
Nicholas Marsolet and Marie LeBarbier,
was the sixth daughter
of Jean Lemire and Louise Marsolet

Her husband Gedeon de Catalorgne,
born in 1662 in Bresse, Bearn,
left France in 1685 after
the revocation of the Edict of Nantes.

He was an Ingeneer and an Architect.
After its fire on February 24 1695,
Mr de Collines put him in charge of
the repairs of the Hotel-Dieu
(as recorded in the Life of Jeanne Mance).

He drew several maps and documents including
"Recueuil de ce qui s'est passe en
Canada au sujet de la guerre, tant des
Anglais que des Iroquois depuis 1682"
.

He started the work on the first Canal Lachine, as hired by the MM. de St-Sulpice.
In 1714 he was the Overseer for
La Redoute at Cap au Diamant and
at Chateau St-Louis.
Later on he helped with the work at the Louisbourg fortifications (Ile Royale)
where he died on January 5 1729.
Descendants of Joseph, son of Gedeon de Catalorgne & Marie-Anne Lemire:

JOSEPH de CATALORGNE (a.k.a.Catalogne)
(b.1694) married in 1733 Charlotte Renaud du Buisson, daughter of Charles Renaud, sieur du Buisson.
Joseph received the Cross of Chevalier St-Louis
and wrote a treatise on the properties of the magnetic needle
(compass) after which he was given a seat at the Academie des Sciences in Paris.
He died in Louisbourg in 1735, during the great fight where they lost Louisbourg to the English.

Louis-Charles-Francois-Gedeon, son of Joseph and Charlotte, married a second cousin, Marie-Louise Guyon des Pres, great-grand-child of Francois and Madeleine Marsolet, daughter of Jacques Guyon and Marie-Anne Lemire,
who was herself daughter of Jean Lemire II, last son of Jean Lemire and Louise Marsolet

Louis-Charles-Francois-Gedeon de Catalorgne had fought at the 1759 Quebec battle and in 1765, unwilling to swear allegiance to the English King, he chose to leave the country with his family to go to St-Domingue (Haiti) where he died in 1781 and was interred in the church.

Louis-Charles-Francois-Gedeon de Catalorgne and Marie-Louise Guyon des Pres had a son Charles-Gedeon, who married in St-Domingue Mademoiselle Gallet de St-Aubin.

Their son Auguste-Francois-Marie-Gedeon de Catalorgne was lieutenant of bataillons and member of the Conseil Colonial and was buried in Madison, New-Jersey. He married Marie-Louise Josephine de Carbonnel. She was a little-niece of the famous Abbe de l'Epee.

On November 16th 1852, Gedeon-Auguste, born in St-Pierre de la Martinique on July 8th 1824,
son of Auguste-Francois-Marie-Gedeon
and
of Marie-Louise Josephine de Carbonnel
was married to Marie-Louise Hylaris Tibierge,
daughter of the nobleman Hyppolite Tibierge
who was the great-nephew of the famous Abbe Tibierge, baron d'Andre, well-known during the reign of Louis XIV and who was mentionned in the letters of Madame de Maintenon.
Gedeon-Auguste was Notary and Lawyer in St-Pierre de la Martinique.

His brother, Jules-Charles (de Carbonnel) de Catalorgne, (Feb 2, 1827-1887), Editor-Owner of the newspaper "Les Antilles", married Georgianna (Deville) Huyghues Despointes (1842-1902) had seven children. First their son Paul-Louis-Gedeon, seventh descendant of the lesser branch, inherited the family property, but only Auguste de Catalogne (1862-1919) and Leo de Catalogne(1884-1941) left children, in Haiti, the U.S.A. and France (Neuilly sur Seine)

Leo, in Haiti, married Josephine (Durand) LERCH. Three of their children married, Gerard de Catalogne married Grette Moeller, Leone de Catalogne married Emile Simonet, and Yolande de Catalogne married Charles Decottignies.

A French and English book "History of Catalone" written by Irene Lahey in November,1977 is sometimes available at the Fortress of Louisbourg in Canada and depicts much of the life under the life of Gedeon de Catalorgne, including information on it's small community "Catalone".

Again, Gedeon de Catalorgne was responsible for the plans and the building of the early Canal Lachine and the Louisbourg fortifications. In 1723 he had a house in Louisbourg, near a lake which was then called Barrachois de Catalogne, ouest of the Mira River. An outstanding legend, passed on by the Native First nations of the day, says that when it became obvious that the English were going to win in Louisbourg, in 1735, some Frenchmen came to Catalogne and buried their last worthy possession on an island in this lake.

He died there in 1729, whereas his son, Joseph, died there in 1735, during the English take-over of Louisbourg.

It is of note that Gedeon's work was superb: he had been in charge of making the plans and building the fortifications of Louisbourg and once the English undertook to take Louisbourg a-part, the fortifications were so well made and formidable that it took years of effort to do so.
His Grand-Son, Louis Charles Francois Gedeon de Catalorgne, survived the Battle of Quebec in 1759, and chose to emigrate to San Domingo, with his wife Marie-Louise Guyon Despres, another greatgrand-daughter of Nicholas Marsolet Jean Guyon and Louis D'Amours rather than serve the new British Monarch who was George III in 1760.

Georges III (1738-1820) was the grand-son of Georges II.

George III’s Father was Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales (1707-51).
His Mother was Augusta of Saxe-Gotha.

Jean Lemire, charpentier
?oux de Louise Marsolet

ABOUT THE MARSOLET FAMILY NAME
When the son of Nicholas, Jean, died without a male line, it was Louise and her husband Jean Lemire who assumed the responsability of continuying the Marsolet name. Therefore the Lemire-Marsolet, and later on the other branch-off created by Bonaventure Marsolais-Lemire represented Nicolas Marsolet de St-Aignan.

His life is one of those stories with a happy ending: he was successful in his relationship with the Montagnais from 1608 to 1635, got married, was rich and lived a fulfilled life with his wife & children, was always healthy and died at an unheard age, in those days, of 90 yrs.
