FIRST GENERATION


1. Gabriel MAUPIN was born about 1666 in Jargeau, France. Jargeau is a few miles east of Orleans, which is south west of Paris. The age of 25 years was given when Gabriel and Marie married, thus he would have been born about 1666. The marriage banns and record are on Family History Library film #199888. The original records are deposited in the Walloon Library Archives, Amsterdam. He died in 1720 in Williamsburg, Virginia. The marriage of Gabriel Maupin and his bride Marie Hersent is found in Family History Library Film #199888. The Walloon church records also show that Gabriel applied for Dutch citizenship on 22 Dec 1689, and it was noted he was a tailor. The application process was never completed.

In 1587 the Amsterdam burgomasters confered the use of the former church of the brother of St. Paul to the French speaking refugees from the southern Netherlands. The address of the church is Walenplein 157. This is per a letter from the Director of the Archives of the City of Amsterdam sent to Dorothy Shaffett on 2 Sep 1985.

The Ship "Nasseau" arrived at Yorktown, Virginia in 1700. The passenger list included the name of Gabriel Maupain, with wife and 3 children. Robert A. Brock, Hugenot Immigration to Virginia.

The names of the three Maupin children who immigrated with their parents were revealed in the Headrights document recorded in York Co., Virginia on June 1st, 1709. The Headrights system allowed each immigrant to apply for land based on 50 acres for each person. Thus, Gabriel applied for and received 250 acres in Henrico county.

Original Walloon church records in the Walloon Library Archives, Amsterdam. Marie HERSENT was born about 1666 in Guevres, France. Guevres is near Dieppe, France. She died in Jul 1748 in Williamsburg, Virginia. Marie was buried 26 Jul 1748 in the Bruton Parish Church graveyard according to the compilation of the church records: Chapplear, Nancy, Bruton and Middleton Parishes, James City County, Virginia: Parish Register 1662-1797, (Washington, DC, 1966) p. 39.
