There destination was Scio, Oregon but ggrandmother was with child and couldn't walk over the mountains so with what provisions she had left, she made five biscuits. She gave three to great grandfather to eat as he traveled over the mountains and kept two for herself. The men took a praire schooner and fixed the bottom so it wouldn't leak. They stuffed the cracks with rags, hewed out make-shift oars and the women rowed down the Columbia River. When they reached the locks a yawl was waiting so they abandoned the schooner, got into their small boat which took them down the Columbia River, finally uniting them at scio, where her mother's father had a sister living. Susan was one of three children born in the valley. She was born April 16, 1855 at Sodaville. About this time the indian war broke out. ggrandfather was summoned to join the settlers in fighting the Rogue Indians in 1856. The war lasted three years and he was present at the final settlement at Table Rock. During the war they were snowed in with only their knap-sacks and their horses near the town of Pendleton. During this time they existed on horse meat. After the Indian war was over the family moved to Wasco Co., on Fifteen Mile. They built a two story house and planted a large orchard. Fourteen children were born. After grandpa's death, grandma moved to Friend. Having the debt of the threshing machine and the children to raise, grandma had many hard times, but she survived. She often said, " sure i know what hard work is, what farmer doesn't" On March 31, 1926, she married her neighbor, William Brown. They had many happy years.
