ATWOOD GENEALOGY

Follow this link to see my family tree. There are about 900 people in this tree and it goes back on several lines to the late 1700's. This information was collected using Parson's Technology Family Tree 5.0, saved in GEDCOM format, then converted to HTML using GED2HTML or GED2WWW. You can see many other examples of this on GENWEB and can search the cumulative database at GENDEX. I hope that you may find a relative of yours here or on the Web. The major families in my tree are Atwood, Glisson, Jones, Turner, Hodges, Kingery, Holland, and Kennedy of South Georgia.

Many thanks to Bob Kingery, a newly discovered cousin. Bob has kindly offered his research to be combined with my own. The result is that the number of names listed here has approximately doubled. If you have questions or information concerning the Kingery surname or any associated names, please contact him.

If you have information that can lead me to the parents of Judson Atwood (b.1792), contact me. He died in Bulloch County, Georgia, but, according to family lore, originally came to Georgia from Connecticut sometime before 1823. Judson appears in the Georgia 1830 Census, but not in the Georgia 1820 Census. Just to confuse the issue, Georgia Census records indicate his birthplace as Vermont. I have been unable to find him as the head of a household in either the MA 1820 Census or the CT 1820 Census. I strongly suspect a connection with Henry Skilton Atwood, Jr. who moved from Connecticut to Savannah, GA to work for an unknown uncle and married Ann McIntosh in Darien, Georgia in 1823. Henry S. Atwood was a descendent of Thomas Atwood.

If you are researching the Atwood family name, be aware that especially prior to 1800, the name was sometimes spelled Wood, Atte Wode, or Attwood. Although Judson Atwood's headstone, which is in Metter, GA, clearly reads "Atwood", his birth record (which I have not been able to find) may in fact be under an alternate spelling.

In the process of trying to locate Judson Atwood's parents, I have created GEDCOM's from a number of published sources. Follow this link to see the family history of Thomas Atwood (1610-1682) of Connecticut generated from "History of Ancient Woodbury, CT" by William Cothren (date not recorded) and "Ye Atte Wode Annals" by Elijah Francis Atwood (1928). This page is about 64K and may take a few minutes to load. You can use your browser to search for a particular name. I cannot attest to complete accuracy of this information, but you may find it helpful.

Thomas Atwood was most likely related to John, Harman, Phillip, Stephen, Henry, and other Atwoods of Massachusets. These names all appear shortly after the founding of Plymouth Colony. I have not yet researched these lines due to my interest in Judson Atwood and his possible connection to Connecticut, but will post the information as I create it. "Ye Atte Wode Annals" has extensive information regarding all of these men and is available from Blair Book Service at a reasonable price.

I have begun adding my wife's family history (Bond and Bondy of Texas and Louisiana).
