HISTORY

Mailáth GyörgyCount Mailáth György was Lord Chief Justice, leader of the Upper House. He was involved in the establishment and organisation of the Hungarian Academy of Science and was a member of its governing body.

In 1810 he was a county official, and in 1811 the parliamentary representative of Pozsony county. Later, he was appointed the first alispán (Vice Lord Lieutenant) of Pozsony county in 1814. His appointment as Governor-General was in 1821, while in 1822 he became chief magistrate. Soon after, he assumed the post of court adviser in the Hungarian Chancellery.

St. Stephen CrossHe was awarded the Cross of St.Stephen.

[The Apostolic Order of St. Stephen was founded by the Empress Maria Theresa on 5 May, 1764 to reward civil merit by members of the Hungarian nobility with at least four quarterings of nobility.

It kept to its original purpose to the end of the Empire and is the rarest of the great Austro-Hungarian orders since it never became a common reward for service.]

After this, he came főispán (Lord Lieutenant) of Hont county (on map below). In 1831, György held the post of State advisor, then rose to be Lord Chief Justice in 1839, a post he held until 1848. He retired not long after, and died in Vienna at the age of 75. He was buried in the family's crypt in Zavar, Pozsony county, Hungary (lower right on map below) now Zavar, Slovakia.
