The Blue Teapot
Years ago when families came across the United States in covered wagons also came a blue pot for tea or coffee.
It had belonged to a great - great - great aunt of mine. It now sits on my kitchen counter with flowers in it. I am so happy that my aunt gave it to me, and I will give it to my niece when she has her own home. This way she will have a piece of family treasure as I do now. I will also tell her the story about the pot's history.
The pot belonged to my great great great Aunt Annie. Aunt Annie and Uncle Amos decided they were going to leave New York and come west to California. To keep the blue pot from being broken along with the other dishes, my Aunt put them down into the barrels with the flour and the sugar. The trip across was very rough on them because there were all kinds of bumps in the road. When they reached the mountains, they had to lighten the wagon and many things were put along the roadway by everyone.
Uncle Amos said "Annie my love, that blue pot has to go." "Oh no" she said, "If it goes, I'll stay right here with it." Well.... they decided the pot could go with them. Finally they made it to San Francisco and settled in a nice big house. Aunt Annie put the blue pot on the buffet in the dining room as a reminder of their trip across the United States.
She passed the blue pot along until it came to live with Aunt Rose in 1906. At that time, they had an earthquake that ruined almost everything there was in San Francisco. But that darned blue pot came right through without anything happening to it.
Since then, the blue pot has made many different moves in boxes and cartons. Until it came to rest in my home. As more generations go, I'm sure the blue pot will have more adventures.
