Wrinkles

"Goodbye mom, I'll write to you while I'm gone. I'll call when I get to Bill and Aunt Sharon's," I was finally on my way flying all the way to South Africa. My aunt and uncle live on a game reserve , they looked after animals and the people who lived there. Uncle Bill is a doctor, the only one around for miles. He even has his own plane to get from one place after another.

I had been there last summer and had a wonderful time learning about things. I also made a very good friend his name is Pogo and his father is the chief of the people in the village. Uncle Bill said he was going to bring Pogo with him to the airport to get me. I finally arrived and started to look for Pogo. I didn't find Pogo but I did find Uncle Bill. "Pogo was parking the truck at the time." Uncle Bill said "He will meet us at baggage."

Pogo was standing there when we got to baggage. "Boy did you grow a lot in the past year" I said. I was now much shorter than him. "You have become a very nice looking girl."said Pogo "You have also come at the right time because Sue-Sue will have her baby any day now."

Sue-Sue is one of the tame elephants on the reserve, she is used to bring all the rest of the elephants in during the summer when it is dry and water is hard to find. "I am glad I have come in time for her baby. Pogo, will you be helping her if she has any trouble?" Pogo is a vet and it is his job to help with the animals. "Yes I will be there when she has her baby and I want you there with me . You will have the honor of naming the baby."

It took us three hours to get back to the reserve . I had fallen asleep and Uncle Bill had carried me into the house and put me on the bed in the spare room. It was early morning when Aunt Sharon woke me and said to dress and come out to the barn because Sue-Sue was going to have her baby.

It took from three in the morning till eleven that night for the baby to be born. "Look how wrinkled her skin is and is it a girl or boy?" I asked. "It's a girl," Pogo told me, "and what are you going to name her?" "Wrinkles," I said "That is a good name." Pogo laughed at the name but he said, "She will be called Wrinkles from now on, and you will be called Mother Wrinkles by the people in the village. You see you are now her human mother by our laws and you must take care of her for life."

I was so happy that I sat down in the hay and hugged Wrinkles.
