Mother's Day Gift
I had just returned from my vacation and was glad to get home again. When I walked in the front door there was a very large box in the front hall. Hanging up my coat, I turned to John and asked him about it. He told me it was sitting there when he came by yesterday. Walking to it, I looked to see if there was a name on the box. There was nothing there, but it was sealed up with tape. "I'll tend to it in the morning, right now I want some tea, and then to bed." I said to John.
The sun was shining through my window when I woke up and went downstairs to the kitchen for coffee. "Good morning mother," said John, "I hope you slept well, and what have you in mind for today?" Not being sure, I told him "I'll just read my mail that came while I was gone, and maybe work in the garden later."
Later that afternoon, while in the garden, I thought about the box that I had seen in the hall the night before. "I'll look at it when I go inside" I told myself.
I looked it over very carefully to see if there was anything on the box to tell me what might be inside, or who it was from, but there was nothing to see. I asked John again about it. He said that I might ask the others to see if they knew. It turned out that no one knew where or from who the box came.
That evening while we were having dinner, I noticed everyone was smiling at each other when they thought I wasn't looking. They were up to something, but what I hadn't a clue. Later when we were all sitting in the living room, I was telling them about my trip, when I noticed them all smiling at each other again. "That's it, will someone tell me what's going on?" I asked.
"It's the box!" said my grandson Rick, "you have to open the box!" I walked into the hall, and up to the box, and broke the tape on the top. Right inside was a note, opening it up I read
"This is for you because we love you very much. Happy Mother's Day!" Everyone had signed it. I tore the paper off, and there it was a beautiful carved desk. I was so surprised and happy that I couldn't talk. All I could say was "Thank You".
John then told me the story about them finding it and they all put in money to buy it. Everytime I pass it in the hall, I remember just how much love there is in my family.
