100. Aane Sipkes
STAAL was born on 5 Feb 1865 in Marrum, Frsl. He died on
2 Sep 1944 in Manhattan, Montana. He emigrated 1892, to the USA.
The couple immigrated to the United States with three children in1892. (The
World's Colombian Exposition was being held in Chicago1892 & 1893. Benjamin
Harrison was President, and Grover Cleveland was re-elected to that office.)
In the 1900 Census, they were listed as living at 410 W. 103rd Place, in the
Fernwood neighborhood, just west of Roseland in Chicago. This area had many small
old houses for rent, and was located immediately behind the VanderMeer Coal Companyon
the south side of 103rd Street, just west of the Chicago & EasternIllinois
Railroad tracks. His occupation in 1900 was listed as Carbuilder, and he was
likely an employee of the Pullman Palace CarCompany, which was the subject of
a long and stormy labor strike in 1894. Later they relocated to Lansing, Illinois,
Griffith, Indiana,and then west, to south-central Montana. Aane & Sijtske

Aane Sipkes Staal was born on 5 Feb 1865 in Marrum, Friesland,
Netherlands. He resided between 1887 and 1892 in Netherlands. He resided
between 1892 and 1902 in Chicago (Roseland), Cook Co., Illinois. He
resided between 1902 and 1907 in Lansing, Cook Co., Illinois. He resided
between 1907 and 1916 in Griffith, Lake Co., Indiana. After Dec 1916 he
resided on a farm, 20 miles north of Columbus, Stillwater Co., Montana. He
died on 2 Sep 1944 in Manhattan, Gallatin Co., Montana. He was buried in
Churchill Cemetery in Manhattan, MT. Before marrying, he served in the
Queen's Army in the Netherlands. The Kalma Genealogy said: Aane was
arbeider te Wanswerd bij huwelijk. (Translation: Aane was a
workman/laborer at Wanswerd when he married.)
While his family lived in Roseland, it is said that he worked for the
Pullman Car Works.3
Randy Bosma posted the following data on Friday 12 Jan. 2001 concerning the children
of Aane and Sytske:
i. Sipke (Sam) Staal was born on 25 Sep 1887 in Wanswerd, Friesland,
Netherlands. He died on 31 Aug 1968.
ii. Dirk (Dick) Staal was born on 1 Aug 1889 in Wanswerd, Friesland,
Netherlands. He died on 21 May 1969 in Indiana. He attended Calvin
College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He also served in the Army.
3 iii. Janke (Jennie) Staal.
iv. Tijtsche (Jessie) Staal was born on 16 Oct 1892 in Chicago
(Roseland), Cook Co., Illinois. She died on 9 May 1952 in Rensselaer,
Jasper Co., Indiana. She was buried in DeMotte, Jasper Co., Indiana.
v. Richtje (Rica) Staal was born on 7 Dec 1894 in Chicago (Roseland),
Cook Co., Illinois. She died on 3 Dec 1978 in Lansing, Cook Co.,
Illinois. She was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Lansing, IL. She was
married on the same day as her sister Dora.
vi. Dijeuwke (Dora) Staal was born on 25 Mar 1896 in Chicago (Roseland),
Cook Co., Illinois. She died on 10 May 1974. She was buried in Hope
Cemetery in Highland, IN. She was married on the same day as her sister Rica.
vii. Ytje (Ida) Staal was born on 20 Apr 1898 in Chicago (Roseland), Cook
Co., Illinois. She was born at home at 410 W. 103rd Place in Roseland, the
7th of 14 children. She died on 16 Apr 1990 in Dyer, Lake Co.,
Indiana. She was buried in Chapel Hill Gardens South in Worth, IL. In
about 1902 her family moved to a farm in Lansing, Illinois, and later to
another farm in Griffith, Indiana. In 1917, when she was 19 years old, the
family moved to Columbus, Montana with a group of Dutch families. She
worked in town as a housekeeper for a doctor's family. At that time John
Sittema was living on a ranch near Columbus with his half brother, Peter
Lindemulder. Some time later both John and Ida came back to Illinois.
viii. Trijntje (Kate) Staal was born on 25 Sep 1899 in Chicago
(Roseland), Cook Co., Illinois. She died on 12 Dec 1970 in Whitehall, Montana.
ix. Sietske (Sadie) Staal was born on 7 Apr 1901 in Lansing, Cook Co.,
Illinois. She died on 5 Dec 1988 in Bozeman, Gallatin Co., Montana. She
was buried in Hills Cemetery in Manhattan, MT. She grew up on the farm in
Indiana and Montana. Later she worked in Billings, Montana as a
housekeeper before she was married. Later she worked in a grocery store
with her husband Harry.
x. Jan (John) Staal 5 was born on 16 Apr 1903 in Dolton, Cook Co.,
Illinois. He often told people he was born in Lansing, Illinois. He died
on 5 Jul 1984 in Ripon, San Joaquin Co., California. He was buried in
Artesia Cemetery in Artesia, CA. John was baptized in the First Christian
Reformed Church at Munster, Indiana on 7 June 1903 by Rev. Peter Van Fleet
pastor of the church. The family moved to Montana in 1916 when John was 13
years old.
xi. Sake Staal was born on 23 Feb 1905 in Lansing, Cook Co.,
Illinois. He died on 3 Sep 1975 in Hammond, Lake Co., Indiana. He was
buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Lansing, IL. His grave is in Section B,
row 8. He worked in construction, on the Alaskan Highway, and some major dams.
xii. Bouke (Bob) Staal was born on 21 Mar 1907 in Griffith, Lake Co.,
Indiana. He died on 8 Feb 1982 in Norwalk, Los Angeles Co.,
California. He was buried in Artesia Cemetery in Artesia, CA.
xiii. Grietje (Grace) Staal was born on 4 Dec 1908 in Griffith, Lake
Co., Indiana. She died on 19 Oct 1995 in Bellingham, Whatcom Co.,
Washington. She was buried in Monumenta Cemetery in Lynden, WA.
xiv. Jacoba (Coba) Staal was born on 20 Dec 1910 in Griffith, Lake Co.,

She died on 5 May 1941 in Manhattan, Montana. Sijtske Dirks Kalma
was born on 7 Mar 1866 in Wanswerd, Friesland,
Netherlands.4 She was the 8th of 13 children. She died on 5 May 1941 in
Manhattan, Gallatin Co., Montana. The obituary that appeared in The Banner
stated that at the time of her death she had 67 grandchildren and 2
great-grandchildren. She was buried in Churchill Cemetery in Manhattan,
MT.
