Keeping Up With the Joneses?

Martha SMITH was born in Upton Cressage, Shropshire, not far from Ditton Priors where she worked. On March 16, 1834, John was born to Martha, who was a single woman, in Ditton Priors. The father of John was known to be William SHIPMAN, abiding in Shrewsbury. On September 28, 1835, Martha SMITH married John JONES. Martha and John had a daughter named Elizabeth. To honour his mother and stepfather, John (b. 1834) took the name SMITH-JONES.

They had 12 children

In the 1920's some of the children chose to drop SMITH from their last name, hence becoming JONESES.
