The P.B.G.V. is a happy breed. They are friendly, affectionate, social dogs. At the same time they are busy, active, independent, and a bit stubborn. Although they appear to be rather small, they are sturdy and tough. They are terrier-like in nature, with a busy, feisty attitude. Being a hound, they do bark, yet not excessively. The P.B.G.V. on his own tends to be quieter than having several together, as they love to bark when they run and play. They are a breed that enjoy companionship of thier own kind--canine companionship. Provided they are raised with cats, rabbits (yes, rabbits!) or any other animal, there usually will not be a problem. The P.B.G.V. is not a rough coated Basset Hound as some believe. The general shape is that of a Basset or a Dachshund, but it must be remembered that hte French word Basset simply means low. A good suggestion is to pronounce the word Basset as the French would (bas-say) and not the American, this takes away the immediate thought that there is a close relationship between the P.B.G.V. and the Basset Hound. However, it must be said that a hound, is a hound, is a hound... Meaning that a hound's first instinct is to put his nose to the ground and follow a scent, so an enclosed yard is a must.
