~~~~~Links Galore~~~~~
I've been
collecting some great genealogy links. I hope they will help
everyone further their research. Some of these appear elsewhere
on the site, but I thought it best to collect ALL of them here in
one spot. All links have been checked for accuracy and are good
as of 5/21/98. If you have any to add, please feel free to email them to me.
-General
Genealogy Links
- Cemetery Records This is the main link to
RootsWeb's cemetery records lists.
from here you can reach records from each state.
- Revolutionary War Bible, Marriage and
Family Records This is an interesting
database
large, well-organized and searchable. There is a charge
to have the records sent to you,
but it's fairly reasonable. The database hasn't been
updated since July of 1997 though.
- Ancestral Findings They have quite a few
CD's you can request look-ups from here. Be sure to read
the Guidelines before requesting. They say answers will
take some time, so be patient.
- The GedPage Program This is a dandy program
that automatically converts your .GED or .PAF files to a
searchable database. If you haven't already seen my
family records displayed in this format, go take a look. The program is easy to
download, and the programmer requests a very small ($10)
fee.
- Gendex files This is a searchable
database with records contributed by family members.
You'll find links to contributors webpages, and email
links so you can exchange information.
- Swisher Gendex files This will take you to
the Swisher records at Gendex.
- Knowx Public records
search
This is a very handy spot for searching contemporary
records. It gives you access to things like home
ownership, home buyers, sellers and many more. The
database is searchable. If you find a record for a name
you're searching there is a charge for it, but it is very
small...usually between $1-$5.
- GoRoots Databases This offers you access
to a wide array of things, some just links to online
websites, others are searchable databases. This looks
like it is growing every day, and near as I can tell it's
all free.
- GenRecords Research
Service
This site offers records for a price (most are around
$15)Looks relatively limited at the moment, but may
grow as time goes by.
- GenServ Family Histories This site claims to have
access to almost 13 million names. It is a subscription
site, but very reasonable. Subscriptions are $12 per year
for a standard membership...only $6 for seniors and
students. Subscription is dependent upon your submission
of a GedCom file to add to their records. They also offer
a two month free trial. One of the freebies is a check
for the number of entries they have on record for any
given surname. Here's what they have for us....SWISHER -
978 SWEITZER
-74 SCHWEITZER - 414 and SWITZER - 1069.
- GenSearch
This is also
a pay site. They claim access to 400 million names!
Membership is $30 per year. But there are only two online
databases. Other searches are at extra cost though
members get a 50% discount. One nice feature is that if
you have already requested and paid for a search and
names are added to their database later, they will be
red flagged and sent to you. The downside of this site is
that they cannot spell worth a darn. I hate that.
- Shadcat's Free Genealogy
Listings
This is a large list of genealogy links. One nice
feature..a surnames list that links you to sites for
thousands of surnames.
- Guide To the Census
Schedules
Useful information on how to work with Census Schedules.
Includes an index to the microfilm rolls.
- 1880 Census Online This is cool! It's only a
1% sampling at the moment, but well worth a look.
Contains over 107,000 families and 1/2 a million names.
Arranged by state, then county. Be sure to read the
README file at the top first, then scroll down and read
the COUNTY CODE file to get the code number for the
county you're looking for, then go ahead and click the
state.
- Hamrick Name Distribution
Maps You
can get an idea of where your surname originated and
where they all moved to over the years here. You can
download it to your computer too. Just right click on the
map and select "Save Picture As".
- Genealogy Gems A VERY nice long list of
links to records and other things of interest.
Alphabetically listed.
- Genealogical CD's
Available For Lookups Ever wanted to get your hands on all of
those fabulous CD's just stuffed with information? Here
generous folks who own them have pooled their resources
and offer free look-ups, and there is a LONG list of CD's
available. Just be sure you read and abide by the rules
they have set.
- Palatines to America A great resource for
information on the Palatines. Try the Immigrant Ancestor
Register to search for names. If you become a member, you
can also request a search from the Palatine Library
records. Membership is $28 for individuals and $30 for
families.
