~~~~~~ New Jersey Swishers ~~~~~~

The New Jersey Swishers first appear in records in Sussex Co. New Jersey. They are just as hard to pin down name-wise as all the other Swishers, due to the German naming pattern (First son after Father's father, second son after Mother's father, third son after Father) and the interchangeability of Swisher, Sweitzer, Schweitzer and Switzer (to name a few!) Consequently there are many Abrahams, Jacobs, Isaacs and Johns, not to mention Christinas, Marias, and Phebes. Here's a short list of those early New Jersey Swishers we have so far.

Notes: Capt. Abraham served in the Revolutionary War in the Sussex Co. Militia, though DAR records confuse him with his son Abraham (who fought in the War of 1812 as a private). The Swisher farm still stands back a lane just a bit south of the church parking lot. It was still lived in by a Swisher (Percy?) until a few years ago (ref: Orr) Capt. Abraham and his family moved to Pickaway Co. OH circa 1805. (ref. Orr)
