Song playing----'Morningside'
SPIRIT’S SECRETby Jerre DivelbissMy spirit holds a secret |
Memories of 'brothers' portrayed on a 'Wall'
Nightmares of soldiers who gave more than all
Mothers and fathers, sisters and sons
Lovers and children with dreams not begun
Wailing and crying with no answer from me
Red stains of the mind too hidden to see.
But a lone Vietnam soldier with understanding of heart
Made me see more than talons, gave to me a new start
Held out his hand, just to say it was so
He'd stand with me always, this man known as 'Bro'
And the healing began just as this Vet said
Slowly yet surely, this path that is led
The night calls still linger, and deep in the night
I still have the memories with not so much fright
Each sound has a meaning
But I know they mean well
A brother understands my time spent in hell
And the talons can't hurt me, teeth nor the claw
Wrapped in wings, fur and feathers
That the 'Brotherhood saw.
Anticipation, nerves plague the waiting
As you huddle deep in your hole, ever watchful on the sky
They fire their mortors and you claw the sand
For fear that the next might take you from this land
As light fades, the day now turns to night
And the night is dark, no moon stare
Thoughts of the unknown, things hidden in the near
Make the strongest fill with fear
You tingle and cringe, straining to see in the dark
As deep, harsh sounds draw to your ears
Be careful not to blink, don’t close your eyes
For you might be infringed upon by the eternal sleep
You flinch as sudden gun fire sings in your ears
Flashes in the night dark, almost like the fourth back home
Only this is not kids playing, this is for real
You point your weapon and explode the night still
Seconds turn to minutes, hours, as the eternal dark fades
Gone are the shadows and fears of the night
You are thankful, thankful you’re still here
Here in the still of the light
Loneliness captures our soul
Evil spreads within our wounded heart
But no one cares
We hunger for love and friendship
And have nowhere to turn
But no one hears
One by one we are disappearing
Trying to find the road to
Inner peace and happiness
As others walk on by
We are the Vietnam Vets
We have scars on our souls
And all we ask is for
A little understanding
