Finding things on the Internet can be exciting and fun, but it can also be exhuasting and fustrating. There are a number of different search engines out there, and many of them can become overwhelming with the amount of information they will bring you. For example if you were to perform a word search for "children" on Alta Vista, you may end up with over 11 million hits, or sites . One of these sites is called spookykids, it sounds innocent enough except is a link to alternative rock music, satanic symbols and incenuations, and the Church of The Anti-Christ. Is this really what you were looking for? So the secret is how to construct your search. What words should you use, and does it matter how you list them? Yes it makes a great difference in which words you use, and how you list them. Lets do another word search on Alta Vista for "children AND literature", the results are now around 4 million. That's probably still too many pages to look through, so lets narrow it down a little more, Let us do a search on "children AND curious AND george", the hits are now closer to 1 million, and you guessed it, they star5t with everybodies favorite monkey, Curious George. I hope you get the idea. The more specific you can set your search perameters, the closer you will come to finding exactly what you are looking for.  The important thing is to learn how the search engine you are using operates. Some of them allow "Boolean" phrases or commands such as those I had used in the examples, AND, OR, NOT, NEAR, FAR, and the list continues. Somewhere on the web page of the search engine you are using is a link named HELP, if there isn't, then use a different search engine. Read these, the will greatly enhance youe ability to finding things on the World Wide Web.
Below I have listed a number of different search engines, and some web sites that list a number of more. I suggest that you spend a little time just playing around with a few of these. When the crunch is on, and you are in need of some information fast, you'll be glad you did.
