Hi, Welcome to my Web site. My name is Tesouro's Blue Sky Sweet Sailin' aka. Sailor. I am a 5 year old Portuguese Water Dog - pictured above right. You will see my predecessor, Abby above on the left, aka Hunter's Autumn Breeze, also a PWD. I live with my mom and dad, aka Barb and Joe in the Dayton, Ohio area. Abby lives deep in my mom and dad's hearts. They loved her so much for almost nine years (12-14-86 to 11-23-95) until she went to the Rainbow Bridge. They immediately came to take me home with them. I was 7 months old at the time and to me it felt as if they kidnapped me (well really more like dognapped me), but after a few months I settled in. Now I have been with mom and dad for over four years and I have them really well trained. Abby was never allowed on the furniture but guess what?? I am allowed wherever I want!! I sleep in bed when I feel like it, I spread out on the couch, and take over the recliners. I love to "go bye" in our truck, and especially love it when we go on trips with the truck camper. My favorite spot when we are camped is high up on the bed over the cab -- I get a "birdseye" view of everything going on -- it's really cool. Sometimes we go fishing and I love to check out each and every fish that comes into the boat. My parents say that Abby could actually tell when a fish was beneath the water. They say that she would perch on the edge of the boat and peer closely at the water -- then all of a sudden her tail would start vibrating intensely and they would know that she had just sensed a fish My favorite snacks are carrots, grapes, bananas, apples, and ice cubes -- which also were Abby's favorites. Abby loved having her teeth brushed and would sit every night by the bathroom sink and wait until mom brushed them -- not me, I don't care too much for that stuff, UGH! Mom says Abby and I had another thing in common and that is that we both love to watch for rabbits, and really perk up when the word "bunny" is uttered. If we were lucky enough to find one in our yard we would chase it, as fast as we could go. Mom works at home as a medical transcriptionist and so I spend a lot of time at her feet. It is neat that mom is home all day because we have "time out" and I get to play. I love it when mom throws my Scooby Doo down the basement stairs and I fly down and retrieve it so that she can throw him again. Sometimes mom gives me a grape or carrot and I will toss it up in the air and bat it around (much like a cat), until I tire of that and finally eat it. When dad comes home from work, I like to prance around and give him my "aroooo whooooo". I talk a lot because mom and dad really like it, they call me "W00oo-Chin" because I have a white chin and to talk I raise my chin to the sky sometimes. Abby never talked, so I am one up on her there! Since Abby went to the Rainbow Bridge, mom has become interested in alternative medicine. She has changed my diet to a raw meat diet with a variety of organic raw veggies that have been put through a juicer or grinder so that I can digest the pulp, and I get the nutrients that I need. Mom says that I need the veggie pulp for fiber because of my colitis, but on this diet I have no problems anymore. I love my new diet -- I get fresh lamb, beef, venison, sardines, Mackeral, clam juice, and sometimes chicken. I don't do well with grains, so instead I get either white potatoes, sweet potatoes, pasta, some pumpkin, squash. I love my new diet:-) Mom says NEVER give a dog *cooked* bones, they can cause harm. Whenever I get fresh raw chicken bones they are put through a grinder so mom doesn't have to worry. Otherwise sometimes I get large beef bones, or large marrow bones to gnaw on. Mom no longer even tries to brush my teeth because they are sparkling white now from the fresh diet and the occasional bones. Before switching your dog to a raw diet you need to do your homework and read several books (listed below). Also I recommend first starting with a good enzyme and probiotic added to the current meal as a good foundation to start with. Then when you have read up and know where you are going with a new diet, proceed ever so slowly -- be patient, and good things will happen. For dogs like Sailor with multiple allergies, and colitis problems a raw diet seems to be the answer. To find out more about a raw diet for your dog you can check out these books: The Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog by Wendy Volhard and Kerry Brown DVM; Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats by Richard Pitcairn DVM; Give Your Dog a Bone by Dr. Ian Billinghurst; and Reigning Cats and Dogs by Pat McKay. Another great book to have is Four Paw, Five Directions by Cheryl Scwartz -- this is a little of everything and geared with TCM in mind (Traditional Chinese Medicine). The Encyclopedia of Natural Health Care by CJ Puotinen is a great book to have on your shelf. There are also many great lists on the web that you can join and learn about a raw diet. All are available from Direct Books, 1-800-776-2665 Mom has found a new vet that can treat me with Chinese herbs, acupuncture, and chiropractic if needed, along with allopathic medicine. More recently mom has also found a homeopathic vet who can utilize other different modalities to help me maintain good health, and to help with any dietary questions that might crop up since he believes in a raw diet! Ask your vet about the safety of yearly vaccinations, ask about titers. There is a great book on vaccinations and their side effects, it is called Who Killed the Darling Buds of May? by Catherine O'Driscoll, available through Amazon books UK. I do want to mention that it is very important to give conventional heartworm medicine, there are just too many cases of heartworm and nosodes are not proven yet to count on them protecting your beloved pet. I love people. We have moved to a new neighborhood and I have met many of the neighbors. They like me so well that they even call mom to see if I can come over to see them! My mom's sister liked Abby so well that she also got a Portuguese Water Dog. We went out to Colorado last year, so I actually got to meet Kelsey! One of our new neighbors likes me so well that they are hoping to get a PWD also. However, PWD's are not for everybody. We are "high energy level" dogs. I have been through 32 weeks of obedience classes, and mom still works with me on obedience and says we may go back to classes!! Mom likes this breed because we have such a fun loving nature, a good sense of humor and love to make our humans laugh. We are highly intelligent and we train somewhat easy but do have a mind of our own and sometimes that can get in the way of what mom expects of us. PWDs for the most part don't shed but we do require a lot of grooming. We love water, we love to eat grass and the roots of grass, along with dirt, and so we can be hard on lawns. When raised with children or exposed to children we are mostly gentle. Mom tells people that we must be treated firmly but gently and most of all fairly. We want to always be with our people and therefore we do not do well as outside dogs -- left do our own devices we will jump fences, dig, or bark. PWDs also have health problems that need to be asked about when looking to purchase a PWD. For more information about Portuguese Water Dogs check out their web site.
They say that she would perch on the edge of the boat and peer closely at the water -- then all of a sudden her tail would start vibrating intensely and they would know that she had just sensed a fish
My favorite snacks are carrots, grapes, bananas, apples, and ice cubes -- which also were Abby's favorites.
I love my new diet:-)
Mom says NEVER give a dog *cooked* bones, they can cause harm.
All are available from Direct Books, 1-800-776-2665
Mom has found a new vet that can treat me with Chinese herbs, acupuncture, and chiropractic if needed, along with allopathic medicine.
