A Day in the Life

A day in the life: An individual whose webpage I regularly read is the head of a group called "Word Goddess". Now, while it would appear that I should be a shoe-in for this group, I don't have a good enough web page to join. Every month they have a 'required' writing. This month was to describe an average day. I found this a cool assignment for myself. The funny thing is, I don't have an 'average' day. Monday and Friday are free days with no required activities. Tuesday the terrorists go to daycare, so I have to have them there by 9am and I don't get them till 4 or even 5 (depending on my day.) On Wednesday K comes over in the afternoon and sometimes stays for dinner, plus Hubby has softball that night so I may not see him my entire waking day (And he knows better than to wake me up when he does come in!) Thursday I meet K's Hubby at Mass at 9, then we go to McDonalds till 12. Sometimes Pumpkin has a playdate with Wesley on Thursday. Finally, Twinkle is still somewhat random in his awake habits. So, the following is a more or less average day:

2:00 am ish~ Twinkle begins fussing. Depending on how strongly he is waking himself up I sometimes have time to go to the bathroom. Pull him out of the carseat (he still sleeps there!) walk into the living room. Since he still resists having his diaper changed before eating I can't change it or feed him in the nursery. So, the living room it is. Change the diaper on the couch. Try to remember which breast he should eat from. Pull up some pillows for arm supports. Feed Twinkle.
2:30 am. Gingerly place Twinkle back in carseat while earnestly praying that he stays asleep. Crawl back into bed.
5:30 am. Twinkle has a morning fuss period. Back to the living room for a diaper change and feeding session.
5:50 am. Back to bed. Usually Twinkle protests being put back into the carseat, so he comes to bed with me and intermittently nurses and fusses. Sometimes I just pull him into bed and don't do the diaper change. That is usually a clue for him to explode and pee in bed.
6:30 am. The alarm goes off. I roll over and attempt to kill Hubby. Hubby is allowed to hit snooze ONCE!
6:40 am. Alarm goes off again. (Note: If Twinkle is not already in bed with me, he gets in bed with me about now.) Pumpkin wakes up and comes into bed with me. Sometimes he falls asleep again. Hubby showers downstairs so that I can fall back asleep and I usually am back sleeping by the time he comes up to get dressed. Hubby leaves for work at 7ish.
7:15 am. Pumpkin begins demanding that I get up. At this point Twinkle is deeply asleep. Pumpkin also begins plotting how to get Precious up. I try to keep Pumpkin quiet. This usually fails.
7:30 am. Take Pumpkin and Precious to the Kitchen for breakfast. This usually takes a while to get everyone to actually eat. Pumpkin helps me make coffee if I make a new pot, or else I boil the leftover in the tea kettle since our m-wave is broken. You know you are REALLY tired if making a pot of coffee is beyond your morning capabilities.
8 am ish. Twinkle is up again. Twinkle is totally delightful from 8 to about 8:45. Smiling and giggling at nothing and happy looking at the ceiling, Precious's nose, his blanket and Precious repeatedly tries to cover him and put him to bed. Start looking for the schoolbus which arrives by 8:20.
8 30 to 9 we play downstairs. Just random things. Depending on what they had for breakfast (sugar vs. real food) they either play nicely or aggravate each other.
9 am Scooby doo comes on and the kids are allowed to watch 1 episode. (Somehow, this always becomes 2, probably because I am feeding Twinkle.)
10am I like to have Twinkle back asleep and the kids outside by 10. We play outside until 11:30 when I put Precious down for a nap. Pumpkin is allowed to stay outside.
Noon - Make Pumpkin lunch, sometimes we eat it on the deck.
12:30 pm Pumpkin goes to bed. (Except on Thursday, when he has a play date with W)
Free time for MOMMY!! Yippee! Assuming Pumpkin does in deed take a nap and Precious and Twinkle both stay asleep. So this free time is more in theory than in actuality! Also meaning I have to make dinner, clean the kitchen, and fold laundry. If Pumpkin does not take a nap then I try to enlist his help in making dinner. He gets to help measure and pour items. I've been doing really well planning, actually buying the items, and making dinner. We haven't ordered pizza in the longest time (except for when guests are up, which has been almost every weekend since Twinkle was born.)
2 pm Precious and Pumpkin are both up and Precious hasn't had lunch yet. Actually, Precious gets up around 1:30, but is usually content to hang out in her crib for a bit. Actually, she seems to need to be by herself for a bit after a nap. If I go in before she calls for me she tends to be fussy. NOT a morning person - just like her dad - even when morning means waking up from a nap at 2 pm. (Twinkle may or may not have gotten up at some point to nurse, he's still rather random. Sometimes he wakes up, and I can get him back to sleep simply by rocking the car seat.)
3 pm. Outside again by 3, where we will play until either daddy comes home at 5 or until they drive me crazy running out of my sight. When they drive me crazy we come in and watch (surprise) another episode of Scooby Doo. Actually, sometimes Precious comes in while Twinkle, Pumpkin, and I stay outside. Barney is a drug to her, and she'll be outside in the sandbox and suddenly get up, run to the screen door and begin begging for Barney. FINE.
4:30. Twinkle gets up. He remains up and happy for maybe 2 hours and then up and fussy until 9pm. NO LIE! Fussy being the key word.
5 to 5:30. Daddy's home! Yippee!
6 pm. We've eaten dinner (usually)
6:30. The ice cream man comes and we have to get ice cream. This is WAY too cute. Pumpkin knows what he wants, so I give him 4 quarters and let him run ahead of me and buy it himself. The first time I checked with the guy to make sure Pumpkin had actually paid him! Hubby was unaware that Pumpkin was able to do this and freaked out when Pumpkin got in line and got his item before we got there. (See what happens while you are away at softball?)
6:30 - 8. Play outside. Hubby and I sit in plastic chairs at the end of the driveway and talk while Pumpkin and Kenny try to interrupt us and we chase Precious down as she repeatedly head's for Kenny's yard to play with the doggies. Actually Hubby drags them around the cul-de-sac in the wagon. Only 2 fit in the wagon at a time so we play a delicate balancing game on who gets in. And Precious will only ride about half way around (till she sees the doggies) then she climbs out, has to be captured, and then carried around the rest of the way. This happens all night long. Or Precious tries to pull Pumpkin. Which she cannot do.
8:30 pm. Precious is now in bed. Hubby asks her if she wants to wash her hands, which she loves to do, and this gets her upstairs and into the bathroom without arguments. She washes her hands and then there is a bit of a struggle to brush her teeth. (Which is odd since she loves to eat the toothpaste at all other times of the day) As Hubby changes her diaper she begins whining for a story, and if Hubby sits down in the reading chair as if he is going to read to her she begins shreiking "Mommy!! Mommy!!" So, if Twinkle is not yet asleep I hand him to Hubby (causing Twinkle to immediately become wide awake) and then I read Precious some stories. (Stomp your feet! Clap your hands! Everybody Ready for a barnyard Dance!) At this point Pumpkin is downstairs watching Scooby Doo (yet again!) or a Dinosaur movie.
9 ish. Pumpkin is now in bed. Again, Hubby usually does the night ritual of washing hands, brushing teeth, makes Pumpkin go potty. I then read the stories. He gets to pick out 2 or 3, depending on what time he actually gets in bed. If he's in bed by 8:40 then we get 3 stories with the idea of being in bed with the lights out by 9. Usually he doesn't get in bed until 10 of 9, and then he gets 2 stories - and somehow the lights are never off until 9:10. Oh well, that is his 20 minutes of alone time with mommy.
I then get a half hour to myself where I do nothing. Just sit. Hubby and I may have a fractured conversation about nothing.
9:45. Julie in bed.

Now, I'm going to repeat that I have no average day. Some mornings we don't watch TV and instead we all take a shower and then the kids take a bath (Precious always leaves the bath first and demands to see Barney). Depends on if Twinkle is up. Also, I usually do my grocery shopping with all 3 kids rather than 'waste' my precious free time and do it with only Twinkle on a Tuesday. Some nights the kids are simply black, and then they get showers (with me of course) (sigh) in the evenings, which means everybody stays up late. Monday nights Pumpkin has soccer, so I may take a bath with Precious and Twinkle. The best way to bath Twinkle and his many rolls of fat is to take him into the tub with me. Twinkle has a morning awake time of at least an hour, a mid afternoon awake time of maybe an hour, and then an extended evening awake time.

PS, Yesterday we put our blow up pool out for the first time, so I think we will be spending much time from now on in the back yard in the pool.
