Ancient City of Dion

September 9, 2001

In the foothills of Mount Olympos, 5 km from the coast of Pieria, lies Dion, the sacred city of the Macedonians. It was at Dion that the Macedonian kings held festivals and games to celebrate their victories. Alexander the Great sacrificed offerings to the Olympian God Zeus here at Dion before setting out on his great campaign in Asia.

Little more than ruins now, the remains of a city dating back to the 6th century B.C. are still impressive and the mosiacs that remain are beautiful.
