Island of Skiathos

August 14-15, 2001

We left early Tuesday morning and drove down to Volos and took the Flying Dolphin (Hydrofoil) to Skiathos. The ship travels at 65 kph and the trip only took about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Even though it was cloudy we decided to chance it and rented two scooters to get around on. It threatened to rain, but it soon cleared up. We found a nice simple place to stay the night, it was okay, but nothing to write home about and it was 20,000 dpx or about $50. I guess for a night stay on a Greek Island, that wasn't that bad.

After our transportation was solved and we had a room for the night we went exploring. We found a nice, if only a little pebbly beach on the north shore of the island. There were not many people there and we enjoyed the rest of the day in the sun. The occasional airliner taking off over us added to the charm. That evening we ate and walked around the town, it was beautiful at night.

Wednesday morning, we got up early and went out to the eastern shore of the island to watch the sunrise together. It was beautiful and we were the only ones there. After stopping for an early breakfast, we went back to our hotel and took a nap and then packed up and left for another day of exploring. We drove to the west-end of the island were the map said was a world renown sandy beach. It was beautiful and a little crowded. We had a wonderful time sunbathing and swimming. The beach was hard packed sand and had a very gradual slope. It was very nice and we stayed most of the day.

In the afternoon, we left to go eat and then explored the island a little more before returning our scooters and boarding the Flying Dolphin for home.
