Celsus Library Grand Theater Market Street Tops in Blue performing at the Grand Theater |
Ephesus was once the commercial center of the ancient world. It is known for its architectural program, supported by its wealthy citizens. It is also the location of the one of the Seven Churches spoken of by the Apostle John. The enormous temple of Ephesus was once considered as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and has been rebuilt several times, most recently in the third century B.C. The ruins include a theater, gymnasium, agora, baths, and the Library of Celsus. Significant to us was learning that this was where Paul spent 3 years of his life teaching the Gospel. We learned that he would teach every day in the Grand Theater. Ephesus was a city with a population of over 300,000 at the time that he lived here. Located near the ruins of Ephesus is the Basilica of St. John which stands near his tomb. Also located nearby is a small house where it is recorded that the Apostle John brought Mary, the mother of Jesus to live out her days. Our trip to Ephesus was to accompany the Tops in Blue group when they were here to perform at the Air Force 50th Anniversary Celebration. Our time was short, but we were able to see the main city of Ephesus, including the baths, the Celsus Library, and the Grand Theater. Tops in Blue treated us to an improptu concert by performing the Irish Blessing in the Grand Theater.
We look forward to returning soon and being able to take the time to
see all of the sites in Ephesus and in the surrounding area.
