The Larkin Family Interests - Winter Camping 1999

Climbing the "High Peaks" in the Adirondack Mountains is a major interest of Dan's and one that he is trying to instill in Shane. Ever since Shane was a toddler, Dan has taken him hiking. In 1988, they hiked Iroquois Mountain and Algonquin Mountain   in the Mount Marcy area.

In February 1999, they climbed Lower Wolf Jaw and Upper Wolf Jaw and camped out along the way.

Starting Out

Shane at the trail register at the Ranger statiion on Johns Brook, February 1999. The trail sign indicates 11 miles to our destination, Wolf Jaw Lean-To.

The sign behind Shane says, IF YOU CARRY IT IN... PLEASE CARRY IT OUT. That was our intention, but...

Camp Site

Setting up camp for the night.

The yellow rope above Shane's head was used to hang up our food for the night out of reach of prowling black bears -- we thought. They proved a tad bit smarter than we gave them credit for. One result was that we did not have to worry about carrying out any left over supplies.
