Cat BooksThis page contains information about some of my favorite cat books. If you have others you think should be included, please email me and I will read them.A word about my taste in cat books... I am the kind of person who scans the last two pages of an animal story before I commit to reading it. Like many of you who have landed on this page, I have experienced the loss of a cherished companion animal. This loss is difficult enough to handle in real life. I have no desire to relive that grief vicariously. These books are, for the most part, "safe" reading. Some of the veterinarian memoirs have a few sad stories, but those are handled in a way that is not emotionally draining. This list focuses on education and entertainment and not on the sadness of loving an animal whose average life span is so much shorter than our own. Most of these books can be ordered on-line from Amazon Books. I have ordered books from Amazon and have found them to be very reliable. If you are looking for a book that is out of print, Bibliofind is another good internet resource. Bibliofind also has inexpensive second-hand copies of books that are still in print. This is one of my all time favorite books. An English writer steals his neighbor's kitten and life changes for this dog-loving man and his wife. This book is out of print, but you can probably get a copy of it through Bibliofind. Cleveland Amory wrote three books about his white rescue cat, Polar Bear. "The Cat Who Came for Christmas" is the first and, in my opinion, the best of the series. The second book, "The Cat and the Curmudgeon" is worth reading, but it is not as good as "The Cat Who Came for Christmas". I have not read the last book, "The Best Cat Ever" because it deals with Polar Bear's final days. I read this book years ago and, to be honest, I don't remember alot about it except that I liked it very much. It is a humorous memoir written by a cat doctor in (I think) New York City. I have just ordered another copy from Amazon Books. I think it's time for a re-read. Peter Gethers was a confirmed cat-hater until a friend gave him Norton, a Scottish Fold kitten, as a gift. It was love at first sight and his cat-hating days were over forever. The sequel to this book, "A Cat Abroad" is not as good.
