NOTE:
A Mahala Springfield was born, about 1803, and married 1st, LeRoy Newby
of Chesterfield county, VA to Laurens, SC. She married second, Reverend
Stephen Powell after 1858 and cemetery records list her as buried next
to him 25 Jul 1873 at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, North Travelers Rest,
SC. Mahala's children from LeRoy were William (LeRoy's father
was William), Thomas, Mary (who m. DeMarcus Roland Poole), Mahala, Susan
Jane, and Minnie Eveline.
Mahala Springfield Newby Powell's tombstone shows her death date as July 25, 1873, but does not give her birth date. The 1850 census (Greenville Co.) from the early part of August, 1850, shows her age as 46, so I'm guessing her birthdate is sometime between then and December of 1803. This would be about right and have her birth in between Nancy and Thomas. I find it hard to believe that there were two Mahala Springfield's in Travelers Rest so close in age, and there is some anecdotal evidence (from the Poole side of the family) that Mahala is the daughter of Thomas and Dicey.
