"State of Alabama, Laurence County., April 2nd, 1840.

We take this opportunity of writing to you to let you know that we are on the land of the living as yet, for which we desire to return thanks to God for his mercies towards us, hoping this letter may reach your hands and find you all in good health. We have had a great deal of sickness in our family last year. We lost our 2nd son last fall, his complaint was croup. He was taken on Friday and died on Sunday. Millbary and her child has been sick, but they are both a getting better. We have heard that Thos. Langston is dead and that he died off very sudden and we heard that his death was occasioned by hard drink, but it was a report made and we don't know any better as we have not got a letter from none of you in 4 year. We want to know how he died, and what was his disease, also we want to know how you are all doing and where you are living, particularly how Uncle Henry and Aunt Sarah and Aunt is a living and who is living with him, or if he and Aunt is a living by themselves, or no, and how you are all a living and where those little children are and what is their prospect to make a living.
"I am working at my trade yet and get more to do than I can do. I shall move from where I am a living next year, but I don't know where as yet. I have it in contemplation to come and bring my wife to see you all next fall, if we can. Isam Aliluns has been to see James Harlan this winter, but we have not heard how they were. Jeremiah Holland's family is all well, except Mahalath, she has not been well since she had her child. It was born the 2nd of March one month ago this day. She has been very bad off for a few days ago with the colick for 4 days in succession, but she is better. John Holland was taken in August last with a abscess on his left leg and had to have it cut off within 6 inches of his hip. He has got well again and is going to school at this time. Mahalath has got a daughter and 3 sons. She calls her last daughter Lennory Jane. John, Sarah, and Mary R. is nearly grown.
"Wm. A. Milan was thrown off a mule day before Christmas and put both his hips out of joint and broke one of his thighs, but he is up and a walking about again. Jeremiah Holland wrote you a letter a few days ago and directed his letter to Laurens Court House, which will give you the particulars of his family. We wish you all to write to us and let us know how your are all a doing. It seems that you all have forgot us in this country as we never get a letter. If you think worth while to write to us direct your letter to Hillsboro, Alabama, Laurence County.
"So we add no more but subscribe ourselves,
                     Yours respectfully until death.
                     Samuel C. Langston
Henry Langston, Millbary Langston, Sara Langston and all inquiring friends.

Mr. Henry Langston

            Laurens District"
