"Admiral Samuel McGowan was a grandson of William McGowan of Ireland who came to South Carolina in 1801. Patrick McGowan was a son of William, and Samuel was a son of Patrick. Admiral "Sam" served as Paymaster General of the U.S. Navy during World War I. His abiding interest in beautifying and maintaining the Laurens City Cemetery led him to make in his will a bequest to the Laurens City Cemetery Association. The Admiral was also a decendant of the fighting Farrows of Spartanburg and Laurens counties."

"An odd fact
in the history of this venerable church is that for more than one hundred
years all of the sessions' clerks serving the congregation were men of
the medical profession."
