The name LANGSTON (as I
have found in my research) comes primarily from the south of England, somewhere
in the area of Devonshire (and/or the Isle of Wight). It is a derivative
of the name LANGSTONE (meaning "Long Stone" in middle English). There
is a town in Devon called LANGSTONE which may be related to the origin
of the name.
If one goes back into history
a bit farther (according to some sources), the name LANGSTON or LANGSTONE
dates to about the year 1200 and is linked to a man (a Baron, I believe)
named BERENGAR DE LANGESTAN, who resided in (or who settled) in Devonshire.
If this is indeed true, the name BERENGAR is very prevalent among late
Roman peoples
-
to the kingdoms of Italy
-
to the Kingdoms of Spain
-
and later the French
overall having many inclusions
among European nobility.
The DE LANGESTAN segment
of the name would normally indicate the place name where the person or
family was from in the distant (or not so distant) past. I have not yet
searched for a place called LANGESTAN (likely in France or Spain I would
think) as yet, but if we find one, therein may lie the origin of the name
LANGSTON.
