Ashland County was formed by legislative act on February 24, 1846. On the first Monday of April, 1846, the county-seat was located at Ashland.
Ashland County was formed out of Richland, Huron, Lorain, and Wayne Counties. From Richland, fractional townships Mifflin, Milton, and Clear Creek were taken. Also, the full townships of Hanover, Green, Vermillion, Montomery, and Orange were taken. From Huron, the full township of Ruggles was taken. From Lorain, the full townships of Troy and Sullivan were taken. And from Wayne, fractional townships of Jackson, Perry, Mohican, and Lake were taken.
