Came to Acadie in 1636 with father, stepmother, younger half-sister. In 1671 census of Port Royal
(Arsenault, Vol 2, pages 554-555)
Martine and Denis in census 1671 Port ROyal. In 1686 they were living
ne ar St. Charles aux Mines, then 1685 at St. Joseph aux Canards River
where Mar tine died.
Name of Martine Gauthier appears in register of La Charisse France at
beginning of 17th century.
Based on the account in Godbout (The passenger list of the Saint-Jehan,
FC&A Rev, Vol 1, page 72) which adds that he was a carpenter, one of
several Basques who went to New France to contruct vessels and launches.
Other contracts locate him in La Rochelle in 1637. In September of that
year, he contracted with Nicholas Denys to go to New France once again.
He apparently traded fur, then returned to France because once again, in
1648, there is a contract (this time with Emmanuel Leborgne) entered
into at du Mas in Agenois for Bugaret to sail to New France.
