Ice Flow on Niagara River
Elizabeth and Jim attended the Niagara Regional Camera Clubs convention during April 2008. The photography convention was held on Grand Island situated in the middle of Niagara River. During a break in schedule, we walked down to the river edge to watch a seasonal ice flow. Elizabeth is seen in the image above watching the ice flow.
Lake Erie, located upstream, is shallow and freezes over during cold winter seasons. Spring warming coupled with wind and wave action breaks up the ice mass. Large chunks of ice flow down Niagara River and over Niagara Falls. Some blocks of ice are the size of automobiles and brush against the pier as they pass by causing the pier to tremble.
