A recent study shown that Hong Kong mother's breastmilk are rich in Omega 3, a substance found in deep water fish that is essential for brain development in young children, but yet, less than 25% of the mothers breastfeed their children. Although efforts have been invested in promoting breastfeeding in Hong Kong, the environment is still harsh for breastfeeding mothers. Most medical personnel are not knowledgeable enough to render advice and most people still have a lot of myths about breastfeeding.
Consider the following Myths about breastfeeding:-
Baby needs to be fed every 1 hour, you are not producing enough milk.
I have to top up on formular because baby is not sleeping through the night.
My milk looks watery, it is not strong enough to meet baby's needs.
The above are nothing but just myths.
The truth is:- Newborns need to be fed often in order to stimulate mother's milk flow, breasfeeding mothers have to feed on demand. Your breast is never empty. The wonders of human body is that they know when your baby needs milk; if you go top up with formular, your body will think that you need less and thus produce less - the result of this vicious cycle is your milk will dry up. A breastfed newborn needs at least 8 feeds in 24 hours. It's sounds very tiring especially to a mother who has just given birth. However, this is nature's way to stimulate milk flow. Once the milk flow kicks in, breastfeeding will be a more enjoyable experience.
Formular fed babies sleep longer because milk powder consists of more fat and they tend to feel fuller after each feed. Breastmilk is easier to digest and hence, breast fed babies need more feeds. That said, some formular babies don't sleep through the night until a very late stage. Every baby is different.
Breastmilk provides all the nutrients a baby needs. It might look watery (that explains why it is easier to digest) but that is all your baby need in the first months. Besides, your breast milk changes all the time:- the first part of the milk, which is more watery, is foremilk and is there to satisy baby's thirst; the latter part is hindmilk, which is creamier and contains all the nutrients, is the food.
It is difficult to change people's mindset in a click. The success of breastfeeding depends on the mother's determination. If you want to do it (despite all the obastcles), you can do it!!!
Breastfeeding is a lot of hard work but it pays off.
I have breastfed my 18-month old exlcusively since day 3 of his birth, he grows from a 6 pounder to a whopping 14 pounder in less than 3 months - the weight gain comes from nothing but breastmilk. At 18 months, he's 22 pounds, not chubby but very active and healthy. I have gone through a lot of obstacles and physical discomforts but once my body is adjusted to the breastfeeding routine, I actually found it more convenient than formular feeding. Consider waking up at wee hours, sneaking into the kitchen and mixing formular instead of just putting baby in your lay and enjoy the most intimate moments with your baby in the dark.
When I first started breasfeeding, I could not imagine I can come this far. The internet is actually full of resources and support for breastfeeding mothers. The following are some newsgroups and breasfeeding links. Check them out!
