Puppy Update # 2

July 8, 1998

The puppies are a week old, and growing like weeds. They've doubled their weight and now all weigh close to two pounds. They look like white ferrets, only with their eyes closed.
Austin seems to be doing a pretty good job as a mommy, although we've had to try several different types of food before we found one she would eat. Her mom (Ch. Magic Mist's Cresent Moon; "Chrissie") loved ricotta cheese mixed with her dry food when nursing, so we went and got ricotta cheese for Austin. Well.... It seems Miss Austin didn't like ricotta cheese, so now we've got a bunch of ricotta cheese left over {oh well, I'm happy I like lasagne :)
At times, Austin seems to need to be coached into the whelping box to feed her pups, but once she's in there, she does fine. One puppy, purple girl, fed for 45 min. straight yesterday!
Also, we have the whelping box in a 6' x 10' kennel run in our garage with pine shavings on the floor. Austin refuses to go the bathroom in the kennel run. She'll hold it until we let her outside.
The puppies should be opening their eyes towards the end of next week, and should really start looking like puppies.
