Clay, Goop, Paste Recipes

Craft Clay: Combine 1 cup corn starch, 2 cups baking soda (1 lb. box) and 1 1/4 cups
water and cook until thickened to doughlike consistency. turn mixture out on pastry board
and knead. Cover with damp cloth or keep in plastic bag. Good for plaques and other
"models" which can be painted when dry.

Modeling "Goop": Stir 2 cups table salt and 2/3 cups water over heat 4-5 minutes.
Remove from heat. Add 1 cup corn starch and 1/2 cup cold water. Stir until smooth. Cook
until thick. Store in plastic bag. This may be used for modeling and will not crumble when
dry as some modeling clay products tend to do when unfired. Beads, colored macaroni, etc.
may be added.

Salt Dough: Mix 4 cups salt and 1 cup corn starch with sufficient water to form a
paste. Cook over medium heat stirring constantly. This is not sticky like flour dough and
will not get moldy because of high salt content. Note: Coffee grounds, sand, corn meal, etc.
can be added to any of the above recipes to provide texture and variety when dried.
Children can also paint the hardened dough mixture.

Baked Dough: Mix together 2 cups salt, 1 cup flour and 1 2/3 cups of water. Cook
mixture until thick. Let children pat the warm dough mixture around the outside of juice
cans, tuna fish cans and other shapes. Provide materials such as beads, rocks, peas,
macaroni, buttons, scrap materials for the children to press into the dough. (Optional: spray
the finished product with gold paint). Bake one hour at 200 degrees. The heat will not
damage beads or paint. This can be used for holiday gift items such as pencil and paper clip
holders.

Colored Salt Paste: Mix 2 parts salt to one part flour. Add powdered paint and mix to
smooth heavy paste. Keep in air tight container. Variation: Add small amount of boiling
water to regular library paste and stir in colored tempera. This gives collages a lacquered
finish.
