M2 29.4.1771 CM Betty CULLIFORD ( thought to be her married name ) Assuming

William's 2 daughters were still living, they were aged about 3 1/2 and 1 year at death of

Abigail, and would have been only 1 year older at the second marriage. Betty also had a

daughter Frances CULLIFORD, at the time of the marriage. Her date of birth, and father,

have not been acurately established, but she is recorded in baptisms in Litton, 1771. A girl

named frances, middle name Culliford, was then baptised daughter of William CHURCH and

Betty on 6th May, 1772, 1 week after the marriage. The event is recorded in the Registers of

both CM and Litton, and this seems unusual, but possibly to officialise the fact, but

publicising, that she was adopted by William as being his child. Since the register entry would

carry significance in proving inheritance, it seems likely this was used to signify formal

adoption.

It seems a prudent move to join formally the 2 single-parent families.

The Family lived CM, and Betty buried probably 31.8.1831 CM

Assuming William 1770 m 1793 Sarah BENDALL, then :

William CHURCH p 11.6.1776 CM s William and Betty, and

William CHURCH p 3.8.1784 L s William and Mary,

The latter is possibly the William who appears on the census 1841 of CM ( but I cannot trace

his father), age 50 ( therefore born about 1790, ag lab, born in county:

The other group of Williams is :

William CHURCH p 17.4.1814 CM s Charles and Hannah

William CHURCH b ~ 1811, CM, from 1841 census living with Elihu and his mother.

This last William could have been a brother of Elihu, or he could have been Elihu's cousin,

William-1812, or Elihu's second cousin, William-1814. Both William-1811 and Elihu had

sons called Charles.

William b ~ 1816, buried CM 22.8.1820, parents unknown, was possibly William p 2.8.1818

son ofGabriel CHURCH and Elizabeth nee BENDALL.

William 1811 married Ann (census) and children were William, Martha, Charles.

John CHURCH m Ann ANNETTS 1849 CM

Phoebe CHURCH m Joseph WALKER 1852 CM, she a widow - ie possibly Phoebe

Gabriel, son of Robert and Mary buried 1805 Litton (T.Miller) -

So who was the Gabriel who married Elizabeth BENDALL at CM 31.12.1815 ?

(*) - this is the only Charles in the baptism register -

Jean SHERGOLD says Michael BARFOOT is descended from :

Charles CHURCH, Carpenter, and Phoebe, who had a son Charles CHURCH p 3.8.1823 CM,

and this latter may be the one who married Mary Ann WATTS in 1848, but his witness was

George CHURCH.

We also know that :

George CHURCH m 5.5.1823 Phoebe BENDALL, CM, and their children, presumably all

except Charles (?), were baptised at Litton :

Matilda, 5.2.1826, Henry, 9.6.1828, and George is recorded as a Carpenter.

(**) Frederick (born about 1843), probably the younger son of William CHURCH and Sarah

YOUNG, was living with Charles (1823) and Mary (nee WATTS) at the 1861 census,

suggesting he was nephew to Charles(1823).

More census data is needed to prove the above.

George b 1800 Litton

Then a George CHURCH married :

5.5.1823 Phoebe BENDALL CM, botp and a different George married

18.12.1848 Elizabeth HARES CM, botp

since James was born about 1840, his mother was not Elizabeth HARES.

1851c records James born CM, but he is not in PR of CM or Litton.

There is a James p 3.1.1841 son of James and Jane at Litton.

Both Jameses are therefore the same age.

PR of CM gives Edward 1843 and Ann 1849 children of George and Eliza ( the previous ones

children of only their father ?)

1881 and 1891 censuses for CM have a James of the right age but born at Gurney Slade (next

parish). I think this is the same James, but would need Gurney Slade registers to prove this,

unless Ken Knows ??

Page 21 - Family Notes :

William CHURCH (1739) married twice. His first wife, Abigail, died 5 years later leaving him

with 2 toddlrs to raise. A year later he married Betty CULLIFORD, who also had a small

daughter, reputedly fathered by William's brother Gabriel. In May 1772 the=is girl was

baptised in the churches of both Litton and Chewton as the daughter of William and Betty.

She later married Isaac TUCKER and had 7 children - George had a son Elihu (who went to

Australia), and then moved to Bristol, and later Hinton Blewitt, where another son, George, is

an ancestor of Tyra MILLER.

- Elihu married and went to Australia, where it seems his like-named nephew joined him.

Of Wiliam and Betty's other children, Ann, Amos, and Richard, all had families that have not

been traced beyond one generation. William (1776) may have married Hannah (about 1790),

and begun the branch of the family that lived in the south of the Parish (Red Hill and Tor

Hole) until at least the 1930's. Living in this rural part of the parish they all worked on the

land. James married Betty BAKER, 1803, and may have had a second wife called Elizabeth.

James and Elizabeth, or Betty, had 6 children, 4 of them having large families. William (1811)

had a small family, but they, and his sister Sarah, later disappear from the records. James

junior (1803) went away, but came back with his wife and young family to Chewton. One of

his children was an ancestor to Mrs Jacqui FISHER, who lives in New Zealand.

John (1805) married Elizabeth SAGE, and the family lived at the Folly and Bathway.

George (1814) married a local girl, Eliza, but seems to have temporarily left Chewton, as his

first son, James (1840), was probably born at Gurney Slade, although James' family all lived

near the Folly, indeed, of his grandchildren, Donald CHURCH lives in Bristol, and Ken (and

Ethel) at Bray's Batch, Chewton.

Elihu (1827), James' last son, moved around a bit in early life, but returned to end his life near

to home. He was probably not born in Chewton, as he was not baptised there until 1832. He

was living in Bath at the time of his marriage, although Sarah was born in Ston Easton, and his

first son was probably born there. Between working on the land he found time for a large

family. Later in life he moved into the village and probably spent a lot of time visiting his

family in South Wales. His children disappear one by one from the census books, leaving only

3 that we know more about.

Albert John (1864) had 3 children and lived in the village.

Arthur Walter (1855) wandered around the southern end of the parish with his family from

Tor Hole to East End, ending up at the Folly, presumably an agricultural worker. His

grandson Victor Herbert (1915) lived in Dinas Powys, near Cardiff, but Victor's daughter

Margaret WILTSHIRE has returned to live in Litton.

Joseph (1860) moved to Cardiff about 1880, and had been training as a printer (stereotyper).

He lived in Canton for a while, then moved to Cadoxton, and later Barry, where he was a

quarryman. This may have had something to do with the excavation of the docks at Barry. He

probably took advantage of the availability of employment at the Docks, which were being

excavated at the time, although it seems a pity he could not pursue a career as a printer after

his apprenticeship. Having finished digging big holes he became a market gardener at Merthyr

Dovan (Barry). He had 3 children. William Joseph was born in Canton, 1887, and worked as

an engine cleaner at Cadoxton, on the Barry Railway, and later lived at Colcot Road, where,

like his father ( and later his daughters), he kept a large kitchen garden.

William Joseph Junior was also born in Canton (1914), (as yet unsure what the connection still

was ???), but grew up in Barry. After a spell at Ranks' flour mills, and careful saving, he was

able to train as a Nurse and work at Llandough and Saint David's Hospitals in Cardiff. Wiliam

Joseph Junior and Edna SANDERSON had a son Malcolm, who lived in Barry until recently

with his wife Elsie (daughter of Mayor W.H.BUTCHER). They have now retired to

Pembrokeshire. Their daughter Carys has worked in a number of schools in Wales, France,

and Jersey, teaching French/English, and son David is a General Practitioner in mid-Wales.

David and Hilary have 2 sons - Robin is a Kiwi souvenir born in New Zealand, and Daniel

born in Aberystwyth
