Sulpher Crested Cockatoo belongs to the parrot family Cacatuidae, and the order of birds known as Pssittaciformes.
In countries other than Australia these Birds are of considerable value and unfortunately that leads to greed on the part of different individuals.
This family of birds is very intelligent and have been used as pets and as performers in animal presentations for many
years.
It does not matter which type of parrot you have, ensure that your are able to interact with it.Teach it to fly outside the cage and when you have stimulus control, you can fly it outside.
The cockatoo family can be sub divided into 3 different groups.
White Cockatoos Cacatua,
Black Cockatoos Calyptorhynchini,
Cockatiel Calopsittacini.
The white cockatoos include, the galah's and the gang gang cockatoo.
The charactoristic features of the bird is the fact that they can erect their crest at will.
This feature is unique in the parrot family.
The bird is renouned for the power of the beak, this feature enables the bird to tear bark off trees to locate food, normally found behind bark, in the form of insect and lavia.
This feature is also important to the animal for personal grooming of feathers.
Depending on the cockatoo, the beak is slightly different depending on species and specific attributes required for survival.
The bird has the ability to also move the feathers located on the cheek region of the head.
This is an aid to the animal when overheating occurs,
the feathers are seperated for additional heat loss.
The feet on the cockatoo are used for more than perching and walking around.
The feet are extensively used by the animal to manipulate food and also as a tool for scratching, this has been observed in the wild and captivity.
the feet are zygodactyl, two toes pointing to the front and two toes pointing to the back.
Behaviour of the bird is flock orientated, the social aspect of the animals behaviour is highly tuned and in captivity will tend to become bord in a short period of time.
This can lead to neurotic behaviour in the form of feather plucking.
The Sulpher Crested Cockatoo, as the name implies has a yellow erectible crest, and is one of the larger in the parrot family. This cockatoo had one of the best success rates, of all the cockatoo and parrot families.
Due to additional water supply and food in the form of grain and other crops the numbers of the animal increased and the territory has in fact spread from the time of colonisation by the european to now.
The bird is now found on islands not normally inhabitated by the species, they have been introduced
to the west and down to Tasmania.
This bird is an exception to the rule and has created a false sense of security that the animals are ok, as so many other animals and birds are disappearing at an alarming rate.
Due to the volume in numbers not much has been done with the species by the aviculturalist.
In the USA however these birds are now breed at a rate to keep the majority of collectors happy, the unhappy ones find ways to aquire what they want.
Sad but true.
We can all play our part to ensure that we do not lose any more species from the planet.
