Graves was born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, February 1, 1818, came to
Collin County, Texas, in 1845, married Martha Coffman, in 1849. They had
five children, three girls and two boys. He arrived in Texas with fifty
cents in cash, flint-rock musket, a pony, a saddle. Pony was stolen by
Indians. At the out-break of the Civil War he had accumulated some live
stock, slaves, $400.00 in gold and his homestead about six miles north of
McKinney, which is now owned by children and grandchildren, near present
town of Melissa on H. & T. C. Railway....
