MRS. ARVEZENA NAUGLE

Biographical souvenir of the State of Texas, @1889

Biographical Sketches, p 630

Mrs. Arvezena Naugle was born in Tennessee September 1, 1831, but while yet an infant was taken by her parents to Daviess county, Missouri, where she was reared. In 1851 the family came to Texas, and consisted of Jesse Adamson, of Tennessee and his wife Priscilla (Wilson) Adamson, of South Carolina, and their ten children, of which number Arvezena is the seventh.

In 1853 Miss Arvezena Adamson was married to Benjamin J. Naugle, a native of Indiana, who came to Texas with his parents about 1846, and in 1846-47 served in the war with Mexico. On marrying, he and wife secured a pre-emption right to 160 acres, he having previously secured a head-right to 320 acres. On this land he continued farming and stock raising until 1862, when he enlisted in the Confederate service and performed duty in Texas, Arkansas and in the Indian Territory: was mostly on guard service, and so continued until the close of the war; although in several skirmishes he was neither wounded nor captured, but he contracted a chronic diarrhea from which he never recovered, and which was partly the cause of his sudden death, August 31, 1871.

Mrs. Naugle bore her husband five children, namely -- William C., Jesse J., Leonidas L., Zora A. and Benjamin J., and all the sons have become prominent citizens of their county. With their aid Mrs. Naugle has managed her large estate since her husband's death, and have now a model farm--one of the most productive in the county. For over thirty years Mrs. Naugle has been a devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal church South, of which her husband was also a member of long standing; her children are all members of the same denomination, and her son Leonidas is a minister of that faith.
