George Henry
Wilcox, one of the owners and business managers of the Sherman Democrat was
recently presented a gold watch by the Young Men's Booster Club of Sherman
as that club's most valuable man for 1937. The presentation was made by Dr.
Manford George Gutzke, who said the award was made to a typical American
community leader, who represents those things this organization feels
important in the life of the community as a whole.
Dr. H. E. Stout,
who called Editor Wilcox to his feet to present him the gold watch, referred
to a long list of local connections and accomplishments of the honoree. The
program listed his affiliations as follows:
Vice-president
and general manager of Sherman Daily Democrat, president of the Red River
Valley Broadcasting Corporation, retiring president of Sherman Council Boy
Scouts of America, member of City Commission since April 1934, member of
board of directors and former president of Sherman Chamber of Commerce,
former member of board of directors of Retail Merchants Association, member
of Red River Improvement Association and made two trips to Washington in
behalf of the proposed Red River dam north of Denison, member of Kangaroo
Club and former president, member of Sherman Lions' Club, member of Woodlawn
Golf Club, member of Sherman Country Club, member of Masonic lodge and
steward in Travis Street Methodist Church.
He is married
and has two children. His hobbies are fishing, hunting and football. Native
of Collin County.
George Henry
Wilcox, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. I. Wilcox, is a native of Collin county, in
his childhood and boyhood residing with his parents at different times at
Melissa, Plano, and McKinney.
About fifteen
years ago, he joined his father, G. I. Wilcox, Newell E. Johnston and A. G.
(Pat) Mayse, all of McKinney, in purchasing the Sherman Democrat of which
corporation his father became President and George Henry Wilcox Business
Manager and Newell Johnston, Editor. After four or five years, Editor Mayse
sold his interest in the Sherman Democrat to go to Paris, Texas, to become
President and General Manager of the Paris News and other papers, where he
has since resided.
George Henry
Wilcox is a grandson of the late "Uncle Henry" Stiff, one of the very
earliest Collin pioneers, who settled in the Stiff Chapel community, ten
miles northeast of McKinney. He is related to a number of McKinney and
Collin county's best people. These and his many other friends and
acquaintances of this his native home county, are much gratified at his
career and honors achieved and awarded him recently, and from time to time
since his location, at Sherman.
The two Daily
Courier-Gazette and Weekly Democrat-Gazette editors and proprietors and
other members of our force join these friends in felicitating Mr. Wilcox on
his well deserved recognition and honors in his adopted home city.
