M'KINNEY MAN COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF U. S. FLEET

ADMIRAL HENRY WILEY MAKES THE TEXAS HIS FLAG SHIP.

McKinney Courier Gazette, September 17, 1927

IS A NATIVE OF McKINNEY

Texas Man to Sail on Ship Rearing the Name of His State.

(Dallas News, Sept. 14)
Admiral H. A. Wiley, United States navy, hoisted his four-star flag of commander in chief of the United states fleet at the mainmast of the newly modernized Battleship Texas last Thursday. He is a Texas man, having been born and reared in McKinney, going through the elementary schools there. He succeeds Admiral Charles F. Hughes both as commander in chief and has the rehabilitated Texas as flagship.

The battleship Texas recently underwent an extensive overhauling, during which she was converted from a coal to an oil-burning ship. Additional deck protection against aerial attack, bilges against underwater bomb and torpedo attack, and new masts and fire control systems were some of the changes made, the cost totaling $2,000,000.

This marks the passing of the last coal-burning ship in the combative forces of the American navy.

The Cruiser Seattle, the late flagship, is to relieve the Pueblo as receiving ship at New York, the Pueblo to be placed of of commission.

A Texas man, now commander in chief of the United States fleet, will sail from New York Oct 6 on the flagship bearing the name of the state of his nativity. The Texas will go through the Panama canal and join the Pacific fleet in its maneuvers.
