Eliza A. Wilson and George Williams
and their descendents
contributed by Pat Nelson
Eliza Wilson, born to Henry
and Dicy Wilson in 1849, married George Williams on
18 March 1869 in
Greene County,
Tennessee. On their
marriage certificate, both are listed as “freedmen.”
According to various censuses, George was a mulatto, born about 1845 in
South Carolina.
His father was from
South Carolina and his mother was
from Virginia.
In 1870, George Williams
earned his living as a garage laborer. The 1880 census gave
his occupation as “farming this season.” The family
relocated from Tennessee to
Texas:
1870
Greeneville Post Office, Civil District #24, Greene County,
Tennessee
1880
District 3, Precinct 5,
Collin
County,
Texas
Based on clues from various
censuses, George and Eliza A. Williams had the following children:
William E. Williams
born about 1869 in
Tennessee
Franklin Williams
born about 1875 in
Tennessee
Homer/ Horace? A. Williams
born about 1876 in
Tennessee
Charles H. Williams
born about 1870 in
Tennessee
Earl Williams
born 14 March 1881 in
Texas
George and Eliza Williams have
not been located on the 1900 census. It has not been
determined for certain what happened to the family; however, there is evidence
that Eliza died between 1883 and 1900 and the rest of the family stayed in
Plano, Collin County, Texas.
On the 1900 census for
Precinct #6, Collin County, Texas, there was a Horace Williams,
born in October of 1875 in Tennessee,
to a father born in
South Carolina and a mother born
in Tennessee.
Horace was listed as a convict.
On the 1910 census for
Precinct #5,
Plano, Collin County, Texas, there
was a George Williams, born about 1847 in
Tennessee to a father born in
South Carolina and a mother born
in Virginia.
George stated that he was a widower and had five children with three still
alive. He was living at 167 Masonic
Street in
Plano with his son Frank, who was
born about 1876 in Tennessee and
was divorced with no children. George was working as a
woodcutter, and Frank was a laborer doing odd jobs.
Living next door to George and
Frank was Earl Williams, born about 1883 in Texas
to parents who were born in Texas.
Earl was living with his mother-in-law Erma Eason, who was a widow, and
with his wife Josie and some of her siblings. Earl and
Josie had been married since about 1906 and had one child, who was still alive.
There was a four year old living in the house whose name was
Lenard, but he was listed as Erma’s son.
On the 1918 WW1 Registration
card for Earl Williams, he gave his birthdate as
14 March 1881. He was living in
Plano, Collin County, Texas, and
working as a laborer for Farmers Gin Company in
Plano. Earl said
his nearest relative was George Williams, also living in
Plano. Years
later on two different delayed birth certificates, Earl’s birthdate was given as
14 November in two different years, 1882 and 1884. The
information given for the parents, however, was consistent.
In 1920, Frank Williams, born
about 1875 in Tennessee to a
father born in South Carolina and
a mother born in Tennessee, was
living at
356 Water Street,
Plano, Precinct #5, Collin County, Texas.
Living with Frank was his brother Earl Williams, born in
Texas to a father born in
South Carolina and a mother born
in Tennessee.
Both were doing day labor. Josie Eason Williams had
remarried; her new husband was Walter Arnold, a laborer for the railroad.
Living with Walter and Josie was Josie’s son Frank Williams,
born about 1910.
In 1930, Frank and Earl
Williams, brothers, were living together in Plano,
Collin County, Texas. The birth information was consistent,
with Frank born in
Tennessee and Earl born in
Texas; the father of both was born
in South Carolina and the mother
of both was born in
Tennessee.
Both Frank and Earl were divorced, and both were working as day laborers.
Frank was doing odd jobs, and Earl was working at a cotton gin.
Josie Eason Williams Arnold was divorced and working as a washerwoman.
Living with her on this census was her son George Williams,
born about 1911.
Frank Williams died in
Precinct # 5,
Plano, Texas,
on 28 October 1945.
His death certificate said he was a widower who had worked as a laborer.
His body was removed to Dallas,
Texas, on
3 November 1945. The informant on the death
certificate was Earl Williams.
