Henry Wilson and Dicy Williams

contributed by Pat Nelson

Henry Wilson and his family migrated from Greene County, Tennessee, to Collin County, Texas, sometime between 1872 and 1880.  Many of their children eventually left Collin County for California, but most probably stayed in Collin County for about 20 years before moving on.  The family of one of their daughters, Eliza Wilson Williams, was still in Collin County in 1930.

According to the 1880 United States census, Henry Wilson was a mulatto born in Virginia to parents who were both born in Virginia.  Depending on which census is used, Henry was born between 1818 and 1828.  He married his wife Dicy Williams about 1846; he stated on the 1900 census that they had been married for 54 years.  She was also listed as a mulatto, born in Tennessee probably between 1829-1831, to parents who were also born in Tennessee.

Henry Wilson earned his living as a farmer.  On the 1870 census, his personal estate was worth $584.  The family moved several times (all data taken from U.S. censuses):

1870    Greeneville Post Office, Civil District #24, Greene County, Tennessee

1880    District 3, Precinct 5, Collin County, Texas

1900    121 Montezuma Street, Dallas City, Precinct #1, Dallas County, Texas

Henry was listed in the 1901 Dallas Directory living at the Montezuma address (rear).

 ……………………………………………………………………………………………..

On the 1900 census, Dicy stated that she had eleven children and that nine were still alive.  Piecing together information from various censuses, ten of those children have been identified.  (All children were listed as mulatto on the 1870 census.)

Martha Wilson          born 25 December 1848, Nashville, Tennessee

Eliza A. Wilson         born about 1849 in Tennessee

Joseph  Wilson          born about 1854 in Tennessee  (Died? Not found on 1880 census)

Sarah E./Sally Wilson   born 11 December 1868/1870, Greeneville, Tennessee

 ………………………………………………………………………………………………

It is not known when or where Henry and Dicy Wilson died, but they probably passed away in the early 1900’s in Dallas, Texas, or possibly in Los Angeles, California, as they have not been found on the 1910 census.
