Jessie Wilson was
born 24 September 1873 in
Tennessee to Henry and Dicy
Wilson.
She was found in 1880
living with her parents in Collin County, Texas,
and in 1900, she was living with her parents at 121
Montezuma Street, Dallas City,
Precinct #1, Dallas County,
Texas. Her name was now
Jessie Neal; she was working as a wash woman. Jessie stated
that she had been married for eight years and had two children.
Her husband and children were not living with her on this census, but
Dock Neal was listed at the Montezuma address in the 1901 Dallas City Directory.
The death certificate for Claude Neal, Jessie Neal’s son,
stated that Dock Neal was
born in
Plano,
Texas.
On the 1910
census, Jessie Neal was living in Los Angeles
City, Los
Angeles County, California (The
street name was unreadable.) and was working as a laundress.
Her two sons, Claude and Clarence, were living with her. The
family must have moved at the beginning of the year, however, since Clarence
Neal was listed living at 147 Montezuma in the Dallas Directories for 1910 and
1911.
Jessie Neal’s
oldest son,
Claude Thomas Neal, was
born
18 May 1892 in Plano,
Collin County, Texas;
his father was also born in Texas.
(Claude’s
death certificate gave his year of birth as 1891 and stated that his father was
also born in Plano.)
In 1910, Claude, living with his mother and brother, was
working at a store. On his 1917 World War I Draft
Registration card, Claude gave his address as 825
McGarry Street, Los Angeles,
California. He was single and
employed as a chauffeur by Mrs. Mary Nicholson of 1626 Harvard.
On the 1920
census, Claude was listed as the head of the household at
1419 East 17th Street in
Los Angeles. He was working as a
chauffeur for a private family. His mother Jessie, a widow
who was working as a laundress, lived with him.
In the 1920 Los
Angeles City Directory, Jessie and her sons were living at the rear of
1419 East 17th Street.
Jessie was listed as the widow of Enoch. Claude was
working as a porter.
Claude has not
been found on the 1930 census; however, his death certificate listed his date of
death as
13 May 1936. He was working
as a chauffeur for a private family and was divorced from his wife Gladys. His
residence was given as
1515 E. 16th Street
in Los Angeles, but he died in
Los Angeles County
General
Hospital. Claude Wilson was buried

Evergreen
Cemetery.
Jessie’s youngest
son, Clarence Willard Neal, was born 17
September 1896 in Dallas,
Texas; his father was also born in
Texas. He was living with his
mother and brother Claude on the 1910 census. On his 1918 World War I Draft
Registration card, he was single and living at 1419
East 17th Street in
Los Angeles. He was employed by Harris & Frank, a
clothing store at 437 S. Spring Street,
Los Angeles,
California.
On the 1920
census, Clarence was still single, living with his mother and brother on
East 17th Street,
and was working as an elevator conductor. In the 1920 Los Angeles City
Directory, he was working as an auto operator and living with his mother and
brother at the rear of
1419 East 17th Street.
The Neal family was living just down the block from Sally Wilson, Sally’s son
Lee Wilson, and Sally’s granddaughter Mildred Irvin. In 1930, Jessie and her
son Clarence Neal are living together at 1438 E. 16th
Street. Her nephew Lee Wilson and a roomer, Nathan
Halton, are living with them.

Los Angeles,
California. His death certificate said that
he had never married: the informant was his mother, Jessie Neal. Clarence was
living at
151 E. 16th Street,
Los Angeles,
California; the same address was given on
Jessie Neal’s death certificate when she died two months later. His death
certificate also stated that he had lived in California
for 46 years, making his family’s arrival in
California about 1903. Clarence
had worked as a day laborer and was a World War I vet. He served form
